The Riverside County Department of Animal Services has an opportunity for a Registered Veterinary Technician - Per Diem to fill current and future vacancies at our Jurupa Valley and San Jacinto locations.
Although incumbents may be placed in one location, travel to all locations is required as needed.
The Registered Veterinary Technician will be responsible for performing routine animal checkups and providing support during emergencies.
Responsibilities include communicating with pet owners about changes in their pet's health, checking animals' vital signs, drawing blood, administering medications, preparing instruments and supplies, assisting with surgeries, monitoring animals post-surgery, and documenting findings.
Additional duties involve working evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
The position reports to a Supervising Registered Veterinary Technician and is classified as the first professional level in the series.

The department operates four shelters in Blythe, Jurupa Valley, San Jacinto, and Thousand Palms.
• Assist veterinarians during physical examinations and surgeries.
• Prepare and sterilize surgical instruments and supplies.
• Support surgeries and monitor animals during and after procedures.
• Provide general care, feeding, and first aid to animals.
• Assist with admissions, discharges, and daily operations.
• Observe animals for illness or injury and report findings.
• Help train staff and manage supplies and medications.
• Handle a variety of species including exotic animals.
Education: Completion of education required for certification by the California Veterinary Medical Board.
Experience: One year of paid or volunteer work in a kennel, veterinary, or animal shelter setting.
Certification: Valid Registered Veterinary Technician certificate issued by the California Veterinary Medical Board.
Other Requirements: Valid California Driver’s License, rabies vaccination series within 30 days, ability to handle animals and perform physical tasks up to seven hours daily and lift up to 50 pounds.
Knowledge of: Humane care methods, veterinary equipment, small animal behavior, and sanitation procedures.
Ability to: Care for small animals, recognize health issues, handle equipment safely, communicate effectively, and maintain records.
