Registered Veterinary Technician
Job Summary
To support clinical teaching and service in the curriculum and public practice of the College of Veterinary Medicine.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to read and write medical records and recommendations.
- Ability to calculate client’s bills, drug dosages, and dilutions.
- Ability to teach students in technical skills and supervise veterinary students, deciding if intervention is required for the safety of students and/or nonhuman animals, and fairly evaluating and documenting veterinary student’s clinical/surgical skills.
- Ability to restrain, handle, and perform a physical exam on a variety of animal species; broad species experience is desirable.
- Knowledge and enthusiasm for small animal preventative care recommendations (nutrition, dentistry, behavior, immunizations), veterinary medical terminology, procedures, surgical nursing, and basic sanitation and upkeep of equipment and environments.
- Ability to perform a variety of basic veterinary office procedures.
- Ability for logical, independent problem solving, attention to detail and process.
- Effective interaction with administration, faculty, staff, students, clients, and outside visitors/vendors.
- Use of computers for Internet searches and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Demonstrated leadership.
- Experience as a Lead Primary RVT at one rotation site or prior lead position.
- Ability to train new RVT staff at all levels.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in teaching veterinary clinical and surgical skills to veterinary students in wellness rotations, clinical skills laboratories, 3rd‑year and 4th‑year courses administered by the College of Veterinary Medicine.
- Participate in the development and implementation of clinical services by performing the technical and non‑technical duties typical of a registered veterinary technician within the Pet Health Clinic, VACS I and VACS II – veterinary ambulatory community service units, 1st and 2nd year clinical courses, 3rd‑year Small Animal Medicine, Shelter Animal, and Surgical courses and 4th‑year clinical courses. (Non‑technical duties could include driving a mobile vet vehicle(s).)
- Assist with client service and patient care in the involved courses, rotations, and public practice.
- Support faculty with technical and non‑technical skills, administrative needs, preparation and planning where needed in the involved courses, rotations, and public practice.
- Assist with cleaning, proper disinfecting for infection control, and organization of the CVM facilities where the rotations, courses, and public practice occur.
- Participate in the production and implementation of the clinical skills curriculum. Assist with preparation and oversight of pet volunteers and laboratories, setting up and cleaning up laboratories. Maintain inventory and equipment.
- Act as an expert resource for tasks typically performed by a Registered Veterinary Technician.
- Participate in veterinary and education research as needed by the College of Veterinary Medicine.
- Fulfill other technical and non‑technical duties as needed in the College of Veterinary Medicine.
Required Qualifications
- Education:
- Completion of a degree from an RVT school.
- RVT License in the State of California.
- Experience:
- Entry level, no experience necessary or up to 5 years of experience in general practice.
- A valid California Driver’s License is required, as the role involves travel to off‑site locations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Education: Completion of internship/externship while in RVT school.

Work Schedule
Hours will vary and may include overtime, evenings and weekends.
Physical Demands
Employee is frequently required to use hands, talk, and hear. Regularly stand, walk, climb stairs, reach with hands and arms. Occasionally sit, stoop, bend, kneel, operate a motor vehicle. Must lift/move dogs and cats up to 50 lbs and sometimes restrain dogs > 100 lbs or move animal/equipment by cart/stretcher up to 100 lbs. Vision requirements: close, distance, color, peripheral, depth, focus, sufficient acuity to drive.
Work Environment
Veterinary clinic/hospital, laboratory or animal shelter setting. Exposure to animals, anesthetic gases, antiseptics, cleaning solutions, drugs, occasional outdoor weather. Moderate noise levels. Moderate exposure to toxins, fumes, slight electrical shock risk, radiation exposure.
Pay Transparency Act
Western University of Health Sciences is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. The Expected Pay Scale is $22.00 – $26.52 per hour.
