Job summary

Darien Public Schools District 61 is seeking a School Nurse to provide professional nursing services that promote student well‑being, academic success, and lifelong achievement. The role includes facilitating development, promoting health and safety, and collaborating with educators and families.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in preparing emergency medical plans and ensure they are present at appropriate locations.
  • Ensure medication guidelines of Illinois are adhered to by teachers, parents, and doctors.
  • Maintain open communication with parents, teachers, physicians and relevant personnel.
  • Administer first aid and emergency care as required for special education during the school day.
  • Maintain up-to-date health records of all students related to medical programs.
  • Continually improve professional knowledge and skills related to the position.
  • Demonstrate computer literacy and competency in using existing technology.
  • Provide school health or nursing services where relevant; care for staff as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Goal

The School Nurse provides professional nursing services that advance the well‑being, academic success, and lifelong achievement of students. To that end, the school nurse will facilitate positive student responses to normal development; promote health and safety; intervene with actual and potential health problems and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self‑management, self‑advocacy, and learning.

Reports To

Special Services Director, Certified District Nurse, Building Principal

Qualifications
  • Licensed as a registered professional nurse in Illinois.
  • Prior professional nursing experience, preferably pediatric, adolescent, community, and/or mental health nursing.
  • Experience in working with children with severe/profound disabilities (desirable).
  • Current CPR program card.
Performance Responsibilities
  • Assist in preparing emergency medical plans and assure they are present at appropriate locations, i.e. local emergency responders, school classrooms/buildings, transportation vehicles, etc.
  • Ensure that the medication guidelines of the State of Illinois are adhered to by teachers, parents, and doctor.
  • Maintain an open line of communication with parents, teachers, physicians, and other pertinent personnel in order to function as an effective member of the educational team.
  • Administer first aid and emergency care as required for special education during the school day.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date health records of all students as they relate to the student’s medical program.
  • Continually improve professional knowledge and skills related to the position and to maintain professional standards.
  • Computer literacy and competency in use of existing technology.
  • Provide school health or nursing services, where relevant.
  • Provide nursing care for staff members as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Compensation

Pay and benefits based on experience and salary established by the BOE. Full time.
