Job summary

Andover Public Schools invites applications for a School Nurse committed to student health and safety. The nurse will assess students’ health, counsel families and staff, and coordinate services with health education and community programs.

Qualifications include Massachusetts RN licensure, a nursing degree (BSN or MSN), and DESE school nursing licensure eligibility, plus experience in child health. Strong communication skills and CPR certification are required.

Qualifications

• Valid license to practice as a registered nurse in Massachusetts.
• Bachelor's degree in nursing; master's degree preferred.
• Massachusetts RN license required.
• Eligible for DESE licensure in school nursing.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in child health or related clinical settings.
• Strong communication with students, parents and staff.
• Completion of orientation program for school health services.

Responsibilities

• Assess and evaluate the students' health.
• Counsel students, parents and school personnel and plan action for health problems.
• Assist in identifying and education of students with health problems affecting learning.
• Provide programs for prevention and control of disease.
• Coordinate health services with health education and other educational programs.
• Coordinate health services with community health programs.
• Observe facilities and recommend health/safety improvements.
• Provide emergency care for injuries or illnesses.
• Provide home assessments and health in team evaluations as requested.
• Provide information on common health problems (neglect, abuse, drugs, nutrition, pregnancy).
• Provide required health services for school personnel.
• Attend staff and health program meetings.
• Support personal care needs of physically handicapped pupils as required.

Job description

The school nurse should be prepared to:

• -Assess and evaluate the students' health.
• -Counsel students, parents and school personnel and plan action for eliminating, minimizing or accepting health problems.
• -Assist in the identification and education of students with special health problems, which affect learning and total growth.
• -Provide programs for the prevention and control of disease.
• -Coordinate health services with health education and other phases of the total educational program.
• -Coordinate health services with community health programs.
• -Observe school facilities and recommend modifications necessary to maintain optimum health and safety for students and school personnel.
• -Provide emergency care in case of injury or sudden illness.
• -Provide the home assessment and health in 766 Team Evaluations upon request of the building chairperson.
• -Provide information as necessary on frequently encountered health problems, such as: child neglect and abuse drug use and abuse, human nutrition and adolescent pregnancy.
• -Provide required health service for school personnel.
• -Attend school staff and system health program-related meetings.
• -Provide for personal care needs of physically handicapped pupil as required in their educational plans.
• -Provide basic health instruction to coordinate with Health Education Program as requested by classroom teachers.-A valid license to practice as a registered nurse in Massachusetts.
• -Completion of a bachelor's degree in nursing or master's degree in nursing from an accredited institution.
• -A minimum of 2 full years of employment in child health, community health, or other relevant clinical settings.
• -Completion of an orientation program based on the requirements for delivery of school health services by the department of Public Health.
• -Must be eligible to apply for DESE Licensure
• -Ability to communicate and interact effectively with students and parents and staff
• -Ability to apply for certification in school nursing with Department of Education.
• -Current certification in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation from a recognized provider.
