Job Summary
Typical wound focused SWOT RN hours will be M-F 8-4:30, however hour requirements may change based on department needs at discretion of nurse manager. Holiday coverage is covered by rotation of employees with 3 holidays needed per employee per year (timeframe is February to February). Wound focused SWOT nurses do rotate through weekend coverage. When scheduled to cover weekends SWOT nurse may choose to continue to work 8 hour shifts or change to 10 hour shifts the week prior to and after weekend coverage.
For this role, the Skin/Wound/Ostomy nurse’s primary duty will be to seewoundpatients in the inpatient setting. However, this nurse will also be cross trained in ostomy care.
The Skin/Wound/Ostomy nurse role specializes in the management of patients with Skin, Wound and Ostomy needs. This includes but not limited to, urinary and fecal diversions (i.e. ostomies), draining wounds and fistulas, fecal and urinary incontinence, and acute and chronic wounds such as post-operative surgical wounds requiring packing or negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT), pressure ulcers and vascular ulcers. The nurse must be able to assess patient condition and help develop a plan of care, administer medications, change dressings, manage NPWT pumps (wound vacs) and mark ostomy sites pre-operatively. The Skin/Wound/Ostomy nurse provides support and education to patients and their families, including but not limited to pre and post-operative teaching, wound care, ostomy care, and ostomy appliance maintenance/trouble-shooting.
