Provides direct patient care to patients using the nursing process in accordance with applicable scope and standards of practice.

Reports to: Unit Director.

FLSA: Non-exempt.

Education: Associates Degree in Nursing Required; Bachelor's Degree in Nursing Preferred.

License: Current RN license to practice in the state of Texas.

Certifications: BCLS within 30 days of hire/transfer; ACLS within 1 year of hire/transfer.

Required Skills

Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Essential Functions

  • Performs plan of care interventions, including medication administration, specimen collection, clinical treatments, and other medical care.
  • Documents patient care given.
  • Monitors, records, and communicates patient condition as appropriate to the care team, physician, patient, and family.
  • Assists patients with activities of daily living, including hygiene, elimination, nutrition, and ambulation.
  • Collaborates across disciplines to coordinate patient care, including transfer, discharge, referral, and psychosocial support.
  • Evaluates learning needs of patient and/or family and provides education appropriate to age, culture, and condition.
  • Acts as an advocate for the patient's physical and emotional well-being.

Non-Essential Functions

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Participates in improvement teams and follows established channels for process improvement ideas.
  • Assists with orienting new employees and students as required.
