Department/Unit Summary

The Labor and Delivery Nurse specializes in caring for pregnant individuals before, during, and after childbirth. Responsibilities include monitoring vital signs, assessing fetal heart rates, administering medications, providing pain management, assisting with inductions and emergency interventions, and supporting patients and families emotionally and physically. Collaboration with obstetricians, midwives, anesthesiologists, and neonatal teams is essential.

This role requires strong critical thinking and calmness under pressure to respond swiftly to complications like preeclampsia, hemorrhage, or fetal distress. The nurse acts as an advocate, educator, and comforter, ensuring a safe and positive childbirth experience.

Qualifications and Requirements

Applicants need a current state RN license and an associate degree from an accredited nursing school. Additional requirements include:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of hire
  • ACLS and PALS certifications within six months of hire
  • Preferred: one year of experience and ASLS certification
