Job Description

The Registered Nurse provides knowledgeable and caring clinical practice and care coordination through an understanding of patients, families, nurses, and healthcare delivery teams. Consistently provides safe and therapeutic care in a holistic and systematic way while incorporating differences into the provision of care and conducting all patient care in a patient/family centered manner. Integrates knowledge, skills, and experiences to meet the needs of patients and families throughout the continuum, including patient and family education. Communicates effectively and works cooperatively with others while respecting and understanding other clinical disciplines. Determines processes for delivery of care from direct patient/family communication, technology, and other healthcare team member collaboration.

Job Responsibilities
  • Performs comprehensive patient health assessments by interpreting multiple data sets and synthesizing their interrelationships.
  • Formulates individualized plans of care based on assessment findings and interpreting trends in patient populations to achieve best practice.
  • Conducts all patient care in a patient and family centered manner, integrating knowledge, skills, and experiences to meet the needs of patients and families throughout the continuum of care.
  • Advocates for patients' rights from the patient and family perspective and provides counsel while acting as a resource to resolve issues.
  • Accesses resources from all disciplines to achieve desired patient outcomes and coordinates healthcare and services for patient/family transition planning.
  • Documents all patient care activities, as per standards, and assists healthcare team members with documentation.
  • Evaluates the process to achieve outcomes, anticipates patient variances, and revises plans of care accordingly.
  • Makes clinical decisions based on experience, patient data, and intuition, promoting clinical decision-making among team members.
  • Communicates effectively, works cooperatively, and respects other clinical disciplines.
  • Assists staff in assessing patients' learning needs and measuring outcomes of patient education.
  • Provides guidance to others regarding practice, serving as a clinical resource, preceptor, and mentor. Delegates patient care activities and coordinates unit activities as needed.
  • Utilizes standards, guidelines, and pathways for care delivery, ensuring processes are based on direct communication, technology, and collaboration.
  • Demonstrates self-development by obtaining at least six hours of formal contact training and maintains own education record.
  • Evaluates clinical and quality outcomes, contributing to performance improvement initiatives.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
Additional Requirements
  • Certification: BLS; ACLS for Critical Care units within 6 months; PALS for Pediatric units within 6 months; chemo certification within 3 months for Infusion Center units.
  • Licensure: Licensed or eligible for licensure in Virginia as a Registered Nurse or hold an active multi-state license.
  • Experience: 1 year as a Registered Nurse; Critical Care experience or fellowship preferred.
  • Education: Bachelor's or Associate's Degree in Nursing. If Associate's, must meet specific requirements within 2 years of hire.
