Job Description

The registered professional nurse is responsible for utilizing job skills to effectively carry out the nursing process, including assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, evaluation, documentation, and time management. She/he is responsible for quality communication, teamwork, leadership, and professionalism. Also, directs, coordinates, and implements patient teaching, quality and safety initiatives, and activities of other health team personnel while maintaining standards of professional nursing.

A Registered Nurse I (RN I) is responsible for the care of the population they are assigned. An RN I is required to complete yearly mandatory competencies, any unit-specific competencies identified by the Director/Designee related to the patient population of their unit, and the completion of the Professional Practice Ladder requirements, which include: assuming responsibility as Charge Nurse, participating in PI activities and department initiatives, communicating and sharing information with the Director/Designee and co-workers from the unit or hospital committee, attending Valley Health paid education seminars, workshops, conferences, or reviewing nursing articles. The portfolio must be current and submitted to the Director/Designee annually by March 1st. The RN routinely solicits and validates patient/family satisfaction, participates in peer review, and develops educational materials for staff, patients, and families.

Qualifications

• Associates Nursing (RN Diploma, ASN, or ADN) required
• Bachelor’s Nursing (BSN) preferred

Certifications & Licenses

• RN License required
• BLS Certification (American Heart Association Healthcare Provider) required
• Relevant Specialty Certification preferred

Additional Requirements

• Must be licensed or eligible to practice as a Registered Nurse in Virginia, either via multi-state license (Nurse Licensure Compact) or single-state license
• New hires must have AHA appropriate certification prior to orientation completion

Minimum Qualifications

• Competent in providing care based on human developmental stages
• Ability to utilize the nursing process effectively
• Reliable phone communication with the hospital
• For RN I positions, must secure an Eligibility to Test Letter from the Virginia Board of Nursing or equivalent documentation if applicable
