Job Summary

This role acts as a supervisor and provider of care at the point of care to individuals and groups of patients within a unit. Responsibilities include evaluating nursing interventions by coordinating, delegating, and supervising care provided by the healthcare team, which includes licensed nurses, registered nurses, and patient care technicians. The supervisor serves as a resource for staff on patient care assessment, planning, and evaluation, and facilitates problem resolution through collaboration with unit leadership and other supervisory staff. Additionally, they identify staff strengths and weaknesses and evaluate staff performance within their span of control.

Minimum Requirements

Education
  • Required: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Bachelor's Degree in Science of Nursing (BSN) is required for all Ochsner Magnet Facilities.
  • Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in nursing.
Experience
  • Required: 1 year of relevant experience as a registered nurse or 2 years as an LPN in an acute care setting.
  • Preferred: 2 years of relevant experience as a registered nurse.
Certifications
  • Required: Current RN license in the state of practice and BLS certification from the American Heart Association.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Problem-solving skills, ability to assess patient needs, self-direction, proficiency in operational indicators, computer skills, effective communication, organizational and time management skills, and ability to work under stress.
Job Duties
  • Administers medications, starts IVs, discharges patients, and coordinates patient care within the unit.
  • Supervises and evaluates staff, promotes adherence to clinical guidelines, manages conflicts, and collaborates on quality and safety initiatives.
  • Supports clinical operations, ensures resource availability, and adapts communication and behavior to patient populations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, maintains compliance with laws and standards, and upholds the organization’s ethical standards.
Physical and Environmental Demands
  • Medium work, requiring exertion of 20-50 pounds of force occasionally, with exposure to blood, body fluids, and potential communicable diseases.
