Job summary

Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Department of Corrections – SCI Smithfield, is seeking a dedicated Registered Nurse for direct patient care in a correctional setting. You will support physicians, administer medicines, perform tests, and maintain detailed medical records while ensuring safety and quality of care.

The role requires PA RN licensure (temporary permits acceptable with 1-year licensure target) and adherence to CJIS/background checks.

Qualifications

• Active authorization to practice as a Registered Nurse in Pennsylvania.
• If a temporary practice permit is held, you must obtain full RN licensure within 1 year.
• Must pass background check and CJIS clearance.
• PA residency requirement is waived for this title.

Responsibilities

This position supports the health and well being of inmates by delivering direct nursing care in a correctional setting. The work involves providing treatment, monitoring patient needs, and ensuring safe and effective healthcare services.

As a Registered Nurse, you will perform the following duties:

• Patient Care: Assess inmate health needs and provide treatments, medication, and daily living assistance
• Clinical Support: Assist physicians during examinations and clinics, and administer tests, immunizations, and screenings
• Emergency Response: Provide first aid, CPR, AED use, and other urgent care actions during medical emergencies
• Record Keeping: Document care, maintain medical records, and prepare reports to ensure accurate health information
• Team Coordination: Share shift reports, communicate essential information, and support continuity of care across staff
• Infection Control: Follow required procedures to maintain safety, sanitation, and quality improvement standards

Work Hours and Additional Information

• Full-time employment, 40-hour work week.
• The Department of Corrections is staffed by three (3) work shifts that cover the facility 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
  • 1st shift: 6:00 AM - 2:30 PM
  • 2nd shift: 2:00 PM - 10:30 PM
  • 3rd shift: 10:00 PM - 6:30 AM
• Work hours TO BE DETERMINED.
• This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
• Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

QUALIFICATIONS

Special Requirements

• This position requires active authorization to practice as a Registered Nurse in Pennsylvania.
• If you possess an active temporary practice permit, you must obtain licensure as a Registered Nurse within the one (1) year period defined by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing.

Other Requirements

• PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
• Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
• If you are within 60 days of graduating from a school of nursing approved by the State Board of Nursing, you are eligible to apply for this job posting. At the time of appointment to a position, you must show proof of possession of a current, valid PA temporary practice permit or PA Registered Nurse license.
• You must be able to perform essential job functions.
