Overview

Barnes-Jewish Hospital at Washington University Medical Center is Missouri's largest hospital and ranked as one of the nation's top hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. It employs full-time academic faculty and community physicians of Washington University School of Medicine, supported by residents, interns, fellows, and other medical professionals. Recognized for nursing excellence, Barnes-Jewish Hospital was the first adult hospital in Missouri to be certified as a Magnet Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

The department consists of specialty-trained RNs, over 50% certified in vascular access, who place IV catheters into the central vascular system using ultrasound technology in minimally invasive procedures. Nurses are skilled in difficult peripheral IV placements, implanted venous port access, care, maintenance, and intraosseous needle placement. They also participate in teaching nurses, MDs, and others, and are involved in policy development and product selection. The department operates 24/7, 365 days a year.

Role Purpose and Responsibilities

Provides direct patient care activities including assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation within nursing standards.

  • Promotes patient and family-centered care, educating on illness management, post-treatment care, and medication administration.
  • Participates in activities promoting safety, quality, and compliance, along with professional development.
  • Develops, implements, and documents care plans in collaboration with the interprofessional team, patient, and family, ensuring effective communication across care continuum.
  • Uses critical nursing skills to assess physical, psychosocial, and emotional needs, respecting patient preferences and barriers to involvement.
  • This is a safety-sensitive position; alertness and safety are essential.
Minimum Requirements

Education: Nursing Diploma/Associate's Degree.

Experience: No experience required.

Licenses & Certifications: RN license.

Preferred Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.

Experience: Less than 2 years.
