Job description

Job Description: Clinical Nurse I, II, III

The Clinical Nurse roles integrate technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet patient and family needs. These roles assist the healthcare team with prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. They provide direction, education, and begin to acquire leadership skills at the unit level.

Responsibilities include delivering and accurately documenting age-specific care based on medical orders and an interdisciplinary plan of care, as well as safely administering prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and interactions.

Progression of Roles
  • Clinical Nurse I: Entry-level position with no prior RN experience required. Requires current RN licensure in Virginia or an eligible/compact state. Typically, a diploma or associate degree in nursing is necessary. No specific experience required, but preferred experience includes prior work as an LPN or nursing assistant.
  • Clinical Nurse II: Requires 12-24 months of RN experience. Similar licensure and educational requirements as Nurse I. Preferred experience includes academic healthcare experience and familiarity with similar patient populations.
  • Clinical Nurse III: Requires at least 3 years of clinical experience, demonstrates advanced clinical knowledge, and serves as a role model. Certification in a specialty area is preferred.
Additional Requirements

All roles follow documented physician or licensed provider orders and practice within Virginia regulations, adhering to the ANA Code of Ethics and hospital policies. Supervisory responsibilities include organizing work and delegating tasks to team members. Clinicians work all shifts, including weekends and holidays, with schedules established by management.

Physical and Mental Requirements

Physical demands include lifting 20-50 lbs, prolonged standing and sitting, and other activities. Mental skills required include strong recall, reasoning, problem-solving, and effective communication. The environment is fast-paced with frequent customer interactions.

Positions serve various age-specific groups depending on unit assignment.
