Job description

The Clinical Nurse I job integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet the needs of the patient and family. This role assists the healthcare team with the prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. It provides direction, education, and begins to develop leadership skills at the unit level. The role involves delivering and accurately documenting direct, age-specific care to patients based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary care plan. It also includes safely administering prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and interactions.

The Clinical Nurse II job demonstrates mastery of clinical skills and begins to apply this knowledge to a specific patient population. It assists the healthcare team with prevention, maintenance, and comfort, recognizes changes in patient conditions, intervenes appropriately, and mobilizes resources to meet patient and family needs. This role provides direction, education, and assumes leadership responsibilities at the unit level, delivering and documenting care accurately, and safely administering medications.

The Clinical Nurse III job demonstrates clinical knowledge at the unit level and begins to apply this to a specific patient population. It involves anticipating changes in patient conditions, intervening appropriately, providing direction, serving as a role model, and delivering and documenting age-specific care accurately. It also includes the safe administration of medications.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:
  • Clin I, Clin II, Clin III: Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible/compact state
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment:
  • Current RN licensure in Virginia, AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent
Experience REQUIRED:
  • Clin I: N/A
  • Clin II: 12 to 24 months RN experience
  • Clin III: 3 years of clinical experience
Experience PREFERRED:
  • Clin I: Experience as LPN, nursing assistant, or care partner in an acute care setting or relevant area
  • Clin II, Clin III: Academic healthcare experience; experience with similar patient populations
Education/training REQUIRED:
  • Diploma or Associate Degree from an approved nursing program
  • All RNs without a Bachelor's degree must enroll in an RN to BSN program within two years and complete it within five years unless grandfathered
Education/training PREFERRED:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or higher; Certification in a specialty area (Clin III)
Independent actions required:
  • Follow documented physician/provider orders; practice within Virginia nursing regulations; adhere to ANA Code of Ethics and established policies
Supervisory responsibilities:
  • Organize work, delegate, and supervise others across all levels (RN, LPN, Care Partners, etc.)
Additional requirements:
  • Work all shifts, including weekends and holidays; schedule adjustments as needed
Age Specific groups served:

As appropriate based on unit assignment.

Physical Requirements:
  • Lifting 20-50 lbs, exposure to hazardous substances, prolonged standing, walking, climbing, reaching
Mental/Sensory and Emotional requirements:
  • Strong recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, reading, logical thinking; ability to handle a fast-paced, noisy environment with multiple priorities
