Position Overview

The Clinical Nurse I job integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet the needs of the patient and family. This role assists the healthcare team with prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. It provides direction, education, and begins to develop leadership skills at the unit level. The job involves delivering and accurately documenting direct, age-specific care based on medical orders and a multidisciplinary plan of care. It also includes safely administering prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and interactions.

Progression and Responsibilities

The Clinical Nurse II job demonstrates mastery of clinical skills and begins applying this knowledge to a specific patient population. It involves recognizing changes in patient conditions, intervening appropriately, mobilizing resources to meet individual needs, providing direction and education, and assuming leadership responsibilities at the unit level. Similar to Nurse I, it involves delivering and documenting care and administering medications safely.

The Clinical Nurse III job demonstrates clinical knowledge at the unit level, applying it to a specific patient population. It involves anticipating changes in patient situations, intervening appropriately, providing direction and serving as a role model. Responsibilities include delivering and documenting age-specific care and safely administering medications.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire
  • Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible/compact state for Clin I, Clin II, Clin III
Requirements for Continued Employment
  • Current RN licensure in Virginia, AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent for Clin I, Clin II, Clin III
Experience
  • Clin I: N/A
  • Clin II: 12 to 24 months RN experience
  • Clin III: 3 years of clinical experience
Preferred Experience
  • Clin I: Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant, or care partner in an acute care setting or relevant area
  • Clin II & III: Academic healthcare experience; experience with similar patient populations
Education/Training
  • All levels: Diploma or Associate's Degree from an approved nursing program
  • Note: RNs without a Bachelor's degree must enroll in an RN to BSN program within two years and complete it within five years unless grandfathered.
  • Preferred: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or higher; Clin III: Certification in specialty area
Independent Actions

Follows physician/licensed provider orders, practices within Virginia nursing regulations, guided by the ANA Code of Ethics and established standards, and adheres to policies and procedures.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Organizes work, delegates, and supervises others across all levels.

Additional Requirements
  • Work all shifts, including weekends and holidays; schedule adjustments as needed.
