Summary of Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

The Surgical Services Registered Nurse (RN) delivers patient care utilizing the nursing process through data collection and assessment, identifies and determines the priority of patient’s problems/needs, and evaluates the process and outcome of nursing care. They coordinate, provide, and direct patient teaching activities and coordinate care provided by health team members.

Essential Job Functions
  1. Conducts initial and ongoing patient assessment in collaboration with the interdisciplinary care team, analyzes data, creates a care plan, implements treatment, and evaluates effectiveness.
  2. Administers medications safely, following state practice standards and hospital policies.
  3. Serves as a point of contact for patient care coordination across hospital departments.
  4. Acts as a patient safety advocate by participating in quality improvement initiatives.
  5. Delegates tasks according to laws, regulations, standards, and staff competency.
  6. Manages nursing care within the OR and coordinates with the surgical team and other care providers.
  7. Observes the surgical team from a broad perspective, assisting in creating a safe and comfortable environment.
  8. Provides preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care, including assessment and discharge instructions.
  9. Assesses patient condition before, during, and after surgery to ensure optimal outcomes.
  10. Prepares sterile packs, operates equipment, and maintains accurate records to support surgical procedures.
  11. Responsible for reprocessing if on the Endoscopy team.
  12. Practices in accordance with the BSMH Nursing Professional Practice Model.

Licensing/Certification
  • Current RN License in the state of practice or covered by a compact agreement.
  • BLS certification (required); ACLS or PALS preferred and must be obtained prior to direct patient care.
  • CNOR certification (preferred).
Education

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (preferred).

Work Experience

2 years of Critical Care experience (preferred). Completion of OR internship preferred.

Training

Successful completion of Periop 101 (preferred).
