Position Overview

The Stepdown Registered Nurse (RN) provides patient care using the nursing process, including data collection, assessment, prioritization of patient needs, and evaluation of care outcomes. The RN collaborates with the interdisciplinary team, coordinates patient teaching, and manages care delivery.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Conduct initial and ongoing patient assessments, develop care plans, implement treatments, and evaluate their effectiveness.
  2. Administer medications safely, adhering to policies and state regulations.
  3. Coordinate patient care across hospital departments.
  4. Participate in quality improvement initiatives as a patient safety advocate.
  5. Collaborate with spiritual care, palliative care, and ethics teams to advocate for patients.
  6. Manage care for patients with multi-system organ failure or trauma.
  7. Utilize the AACN Synergy Model to support patient stability and recovery.
  8. Prioritize information and respond promptly to changing patient conditions.
  9. Address the unique needs of patients and families, advocating for their quality of life.
Qualifications
  • Current RN license in the state of practice or covered by a compact agreement.
  • Preferred certifications include BLS, ACLS, CCRN, PCCN, NIH Stroke Certification.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.
  • Minimum of 1 year RN experience required; 6 months in an acute care hospital preferred.
Skills and Competencies
  • Ability to assess and develop care plans based on clinical knowledge.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Cultural competence and sensitivity.
  • Ability to work in high-stress situations and handle emergencies calmly.
  • Knowledge of advanced respiratory modalities and hemodynamic monitoring.
Work Environment

May involve high stress, exposure to hazardous substances, and physical or verbal altercations. Use of protective equipment and adherence to infection control policies are mandatory.

Patient Population

Care provided to adults and geriatrics, with an understanding of development principles across the lifespan.
