Located in Largo in the heart of Prince George’s County, our new state-of-the-art regional medical center (UM Capital Region Medical Center) will provide improved access to primary and ambulatory care services, and serve as a tertiary care center for critically ill patients. In addition, our new space will allow us to expand our offerings as a community partner to help improve the health status of Prince George’s County residents.
General Summary
This role is considered the minimum for all nurses with more than 12 months of experience. Provides and coordinates independent care to patients within a clinical specialty as a fully effective and participative member of the multidisciplinary patient care services team.
Principal Responsibilities and Tasks
The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. These are not exhaustive of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.
Clinical Practice:
- Provides independent care to unit-specific patient populations; serves as a clinical resource for others, utilizes and integrates evidence into practice, and functions effectively in roles specific to the unit.
- Accountable to patients and families for the processes and outcomes of care during an episode of care.
- Accountable to peers for the advancement of group practice on the unit, and to the nurse manager for overall work performance.
- Serves as an effective primary coordinating nurse; collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to plan and coordinate care addressing patient/family needs.
Service/Quality:
- Assists in team development and evaluation of Patient and Family Centered Care principles, suggests improvement methods, and participates in data collection related to outcomes.
- Participates in initiatives addressing Nursing Sensitive Quality Indicators (NSQI).
- Contributes to Performance Improvement, Evidence-Based Practice, or research at the unit level.
- Complies with standards and participates in unit activities for regulatory compliance.
Unit Operations:
- Supports charge nurse decisions; performs charge role for assigned shifts as needed.
- Assists in developing clinical practice protocols and standards.
- Participates in unit-based processes like Performance Improvement, Professional Development, and Teamwork; assists in developing and implementing action plans.
- Orients new Clinical Nurse I staff to the unit decision-making structures and councils.
Professional Development:
- Serves as preceptor, coach, and mentor to new nurses and students. Contributes to skills development of ancillary personnel and attends educational offerings independently.
Education & Experience
- Maryland RN licensure or eligibility via Compact agreements.
- Up-to-date mandatory training and classes.
- One year of nursing experience with solid clinical skills.
- Diploma or Associate Degree in Nursing.
- Current BLS certification; additional unit-specific licensure (e.g., NRP, STABLE, ACLS, Trauma 101) as required.
- Maintain 10 contact hours of education every two years.
- Recent clinical experience in a comparable setting.

- Effective communication skills, leadership qualities, teamwork, and computer proficiency.
- Ability to provide age-specific and population-specific care.
Ensure patient safety by participating in safety initiatives, reporting risks and adverse events, and implementing policies consistently. Develop effective relationships and communication with team members.
