Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

The Nurse Manager is responsible for the integration, facilitation, and coordination of administrative and clinical practice for the assigned nursing unit(s) with twenty-four hour accountability. They provide management and clinical support to other nursing units and hospital-wide as required. The Nurse Manager serves as a professional role model, mentor, and clinical resource/educator for nurses and other members of the healthcare team. They develop unit goals and objectives with staff based on analysis of clinical and managerial processes to improve patient outcomes and foster a culture of excellence. The Nurse Manager represents the unit and acts as a liaison to internal and external customers. They participate in professional development activities, hospital-wide committees, and demonstrate various management styles. They are involved in unit budget development, monitoring, and variance analysis.

II. Employment Qualifications
  • Must be a graduate of an accredited program of professional nursing. A BSN or higher degree in Nursing is required; MSN preferred.
  • Must possess a current license as a Registered Nurse from the State of Virginia or be awaiting reciprocity.
  • Must maintain current CPR certification.
  • Requires knowledge of the organization and operation of a patient care unit, nursing care techniques, and methods. Generally acquired through three to five years of experience as a professional nurse, with increasing responsibility and experience appropriate to the specialty area.
  • Must have a broad knowledge of clinical, psychological, and pathophysiological theories related to nursing diagnosis and treatment. Ability to perform a range of nursing techniques, including non-routine procedures, normally acquired through three to five years of experience.
  • Previous supervisory or charge nurse experience that includes knowledge of financial management and personnel supervision.
