Unit Overview

The Med/Surg unit at Duke Regional Hospital is a 34-bed unit caring for patients with a wide range of diagnoses including those requiring cardiac telemetry. This unit also serves as a specialty unit for patients with respiratory illnesses that require higher oxygen demands but who do not meet ICU criteria. Our patient-centered team of healthcare professionals is committed to promoting excellence in patient care through best practices, innovation, research, and compassionate support. General Description Of This Role

Independently plan and provide professional nursing care for patients in accordance with physician orders and established policies and procedures. Provide nursing services to patients and families within the scope of the RN as defined by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.

Duties And Responsibilities Of This Role
  • Plan, provide, and document professional nursing care, utilizing the nursing process, based on physician orders and policies under supervision of the team leader or charge nurse.
  • Delegate tasks and supervise activities of other licensed and unlicensed care providers.
  • Assist other healthcare personnel in patient care delivery. Maintain environment of care including equipment and resources.
  • Prioritize work and identify available resources to complete care efficiently.
  • Participate in professional development, maintain competencies, and seek educational opportunities.
  • Support staff development and participate in performance improvement activities.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
  • Graduation from an accredited BSN program required.
  • RNs without a BSN must enroll in a BSN program within two years and complete it within five years of employment.
  • Exceptions apply for nurses hired before July 1, 2014.
Experience
  • No previous RN experience required for new graduates.
  • One year of RN experience required for Level II RNs.
Degrees, Licensures, Certifications
  • Current or compact RN licensure in North Carolina.
  • BLS certification required.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Knowledge of nursing scope, process, and professional practice.
  • Ability to assess patient needs, work collaboratively, communicate effectively, and teach patients and families.
  • Competent in life support and documentation, with ability to learn new software and navigate the hospital environment.
  • Physical ability to stand, walk, and perform clinical duties.
