Location: Newport News, Virginia

Overview

Medsurg Float RN works under the supervision of the Nurse Manager and the Director and is responsible for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care for assigned patients. The RN will float to a variety of settings in the Medsurg Complex at RHS Trauma Center per requirements in the PRN Float Agreement. The RN may work in a variety of settings in the Medical/Surgical Complex and roles within Riverside Health System. The RN utilizes communication, critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making to create a care plan for each patient based on physiological, psychosocial, and cultural diversity. The RN supervises and delegates non‑professional personnel working directly with them to ensure optimum patient care. The RN demonstrates competency in age‑related needs of the specific patient populations served in the Medical/Surgical units/departments, and works under the direction of leadership and a multidisciplinary team to provide comprehensive services or clinical care in accordance with standards of excellence established by Riverside Health System.

What You Will Do

• Demonstrate ability to assess patient clinical and psychosocial needs by applying standards of practice as it relates to the specialty or patient population served (see unit‑specific competencies and equipment checklists).
• Partner with patients and families to develop, implement, and evaluate plan of care, treatments, and procedures that contribute to physiological and psychosocial outcomes.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary team in coordinating care and facilitate safe patient transitions to the next care setting.
• Demonstrate a sense of urgency to facilitate patient throughput, ensuring consistent, competent, and ethical care and focusing on quality outcomes when addressing customer needs.
• Demonstrate understanding of diverse patient care populations and adapt education methods to ensure patient/family comprehension.
• Educate by individualizing and coordinating patient education; discharge education includes family/caregiver. Evaluate comprehension and document.
• Accurately complete all required clinical and quality documentation consistently per RHS standards and regulatory requirements.
• Delegate and prioritize tasks appropriately to facilitate quality patient care and respond to emergency situations.
• Recognize and respond to emergency situations; evaluate own needs for support and use identified systems to meet needs.

Qualifications

Education

• Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
• Preferred: Associate’s Degree in Nursing
• Required: Nursing Diploma (Associate’s or Bachelor’s in Nursing accepted in lieu of Diploma)
• Graduates with DHS or no diploma: Bachelor’s Degree, HS Diploma/GED only required if Nursing Diploma Graduate

Experience

• Required: 2 years of Hospital RN experience.

Skills and Abilities

• Ability to meet scheduling requirements in a full‑time PRN Float Agreement.

Licenses and Certifications

• Registered Nurse (RN) - Virginia Department of Health Professions (VDHP) or licensed in a compact state upon hire.
• CPR/BLS Certification - AHA/ARC/AHISI upon hire.
