Registered Nurse (RN), PRN-Unit Based Pool Tier IV, Labor & Delivery - Rotating shifts
PRN Tier IV: Work a minimum of 72 hours per month, including three 12-hour weekend shifts (Saturday and Sunday)
Holidays: One 12-hour Major Holiday shift and two 12-hour Minor Holiday shifts
General Summary
A clinically competent professional who utilizes the nursing process to direct and deliver care to the patient population on an assigned unit.
- Assesses and documents accurately the physical, psychosocial, educational, spiritual/cultural, and discharge planning needs of the patient/family.
- Develops a prioritized plan of care (POC) based on medical diagnosis and identified patient/family needs. Updates POC daily.
- Implements the plan of care by performing evidence-based interventions and treatments specific to the diagnosis or problem, such as administering/monitoring blood transfusions, medications, IV therapy per hospital policy. Demonstrates ability to function effectively in clinical emergencies. Demonstrates skills and competencies with:
- Maintaining NRP, fetal monitoring, and rhythm recognition certification/competency
- Orienting and maintaining competencies as a mother/baby RN for all Labor and Delivery nurses
- Completing Advanced Life Support skills for the OB nurse course for nurses involved in the recovery of C-section patients
- Sets priorities and organizes work effectively.
- Provides health teaching on topics such as risk-reducing behaviors, activities of daily living, infection prevention, and patient rights and responsibilities.
- Ensures the Environment of Care is maintained according to regulatory guidelines.
- Evaluates and documents the effectiveness of strategies in relation to patient responses and outcomes.
- Ensures compliance with all National Hospital Quality Measures, Patient Safety Goals, and infection control standards.
- Attains current nursing practice knowledge and competency.
- Demonstrates skills for adolescent, adult, and elderly patients.
- Maintains and is accountable for 20 CEUs annually.
- Submits clinical ladder completion list yearly, if applicable.
- Contributes to professional development of peers and colleagues; assists with care implementation.
- Partners with others to effect change using SBAR communication and hand-off policies.
- Delivers care that respects patient dignity, rights, and confidentiality, integrating ethical provisions.
- Incorporates evidence-based findings into practice and participates in quality improvement efforts.
- Considers safety, effectiveness, cost, and impact on practice in care planning and delivery, using supplies and equipment cost-effectively.
- Assumes leadership roles within the team and participates in training nursing students or precepting, if requested.
- Delegates tasks and duties in compliance with policy for efficient and effective patient care.
Work Orientation & Experience
- Prior experience in Labor & Delivery is required.
- Orientation based on experience level, determined by the unit. All new RN team members must complete the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Hospital Breastfeeding Policy Training Program regardless of experience.
