FT Nights - Critical Care Registered Nurse (RN)

Summary of Primary Functions: The Critical Care RN provides, coordinates, plans, and evaluates patient care in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team, within the nursing process framework. Responsibilities include data collection, assessment, problem identification, prioritization, and evaluation of nursing care, interventions, and teaching. The RN also coordinates patient teaching activities and care provided by team members.

Essential Job Functions:
  1. Conducts initial and ongoing patient assessments, creates care plans, implements treatments, and evaluates their effectiveness.
  2. Administers medications safely, in accordance with state practice standards and organizational policies.
  3. Serves as a point of contact for care coordination across hospital departments.
  4. Acts as a patient safety advocate by participating in quality improvement initiatives and collaborating with spiritual care, palliative, and ethics teams when needed.
  5. Coordinates care for family members or caregivers.
  6. Performs nursing care involving life-supporting technology such as ventilators, CRRT, IABP, Impella, ECMO.
  7. Performs hemodynamic monitoring and manages critically ill patients with multi-system organ failure or trauma.
  8. Utilizes the AACN Synergy Model to support, restore, or palliate patient stability across the lifespan.
  9. Prioritizes and synthesizes information for immediate, evidence-based, patient-focused actions.
  10. Responds confidently to changing patient conditions and advocates for patient and family needs.
  11. Practices in accordance with the BSMH Nursing Professional Practice Model.

Licensing/Certification:

Current RN license in the state of practice or covered by a compact agreement. BLS and ACLS certifications are required; PALS and other certifications are preferred or required depending on the unit.

Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.
  • Minimum 1 year RN experience required; 6 months in Med/Surg, Critical Care, Stepdown, or Emergency Department preferred.
Skills:
  • Strong assessment, clinical judgment, and communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively and demonstrate cultural competence.
  • Knowledge of advanced respiratory and hemodynamic monitoring modalities.
  • Ability to handle high-stress situations and adapt quickly.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:

Includes high-stress periods, exposure to hazards, physical demands such as lifting, repositioning patients, and operating medical equipment. Must exercise universal precautions and use protective equipment as required.

Patient Population:

Provides care appropriate to adult and geriatric patients, understanding their developmental needs and specific health requirements.
