Job summary

HCA Medical Center seeks a Nurse Extern to join the nursing team and gain hands-on experience while exploring the full scope of the RN role. You will support safe, compassionate care and build skills toward more advanced responsibilities as you progress through your nursing program.

You will assist with ADLs, monitor vital signs, document care, and communicate with the team to ensure seamless care. The role emphasizes learning, growth, and patient-centered support within a dynamic hospital

Qualifications

• Basic Life Support certification required or obtained within 30 days of start date.
• Active enrollment in a nursing program for RN; fundamentals completed by start date.

Responsibilities

• Assist with activities of daily living (ADLs), monitor vital signs, support mobility and comfort.
• Perform basic nursing tasks such as wound care, catheter care, specimen collection, and other duties as competency grows.
• Document care and communicate updates to the nursing team to maintain coordinated patient care.
• Educate patients and families about care plans and recovery steps.
• Maintain clean, safe patient areas and adhere to infection prevention practices.
• Engage in learning opportunities and work with supervisor to build a personal career development plan.

Job Summary and Qualifications

As a Nurse Extern, you'll be a valued part of the nursing team, gaining hands-on experience as you explore the full scope of the Registered Nurse role. You'll help deliver safe, compassionate care that improves patients' lives while building the skills and confidence to take on more advanced responsibilities as you progress through your nursing program.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Providing essential care for patients by helping with ADLs (Activities of Daily Living), checking vital signs, supporting mobility, and ensuring comfort and hygiene


• Performing nursing tasks like wound care, catheter care, collecting specimens, and other basic procedures as you gain experience and grow in your competency


• Documenting care accurately and communicating timely updates with the nursing team to keep patient care seamless and coordinated


• Helping patients and families understand their care plans and offering guidance for their health and recovery


• Keeping patient areas clean and safe by following infection prevention practices, managing equipment, and maintaining an organized environment


• Championing your growth and enhancing patient care by engaging in learning opportunities, sharing ideas to improve care, and partnering with your supervisor or preceptor to build your personal career development plan

What qualifications you will need:

• Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date


• Must be actively enrolle in a Nursing program for RN only. Must have nursing fundamentals completed by start date and actively taking Nursing fundamentals to interview.
