Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Provide professional nursing care post-endoscopy per standards.
  • Assist physicians with exams and procedures.
  • Handle medically related phone calls as directed by physicians.
  • Maintain clean exam rooms and supplies.
  • Counsel and reassure apprehensive patients.
  • Perform tasks as directed by the physician, including IV starts and medication prep.
  • Ensure proper disposal of sharps and hazardous waste.
  • Educate patients on medications and self-care.
  • Document charts accurately and timely.
  • Notify patients of test results and schedule follow-ups.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality.
  • May mix medications such as cytotoxic drugs.
  • Observe patient responses and report to physicians.

Job Title

General Summary Of Duties

Responsible for providing professional nursing care for patients following established standards and practices. Assists physicians in coordinating patient care. Functions as primary liaison between patients, staff and physicians. No weekends, nights or holidays required. Assists with patient recovery following endoscopy procedures and discharge.

Reports to Director of Nursing

Supervision Exercised

This position does not supervise any employees.

Essential Functions
  • Primarily responsible for patient recover following endoscopy procedures.
  • Assists physician with exams and special procedures.
  • Makes, receives and handles medically related phone calls as directed by physicians (RX's, hospital admissions, patients, and other physicians).
  • Keeps exam rooms and doctors' offices clean, and maintain necessary supplies.
  • Counsels and reassures apprehensive patients, assisting them with all clinic routines.
  • Performs a variety of medically related tasks as directed by the physician and particularly to his specialization.
  • Make sure that all exam and special procedure rooms have biohazard and non-biohazard containers.
  • Assures that all sharps are disposed of in a Sharps Container.
  • Educates patients in self-administration of medication, when appropriate.
  • Follows clinic policies for infection control in handling and disposing of infectious/hazardous waste materials.
  • Ensures that patient chart entries are made accurately and in a timely manner; forwards charts as appropriate.
  • Notifies patients of test results; schedules follow-up appointments as appropriate.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • May require starting IV's, doing IV pushes.
  • May require mixing medications such as cytotoxic drugs.
  • Observes records and reports patient's condition and reaction to drugs and treatments to physicians. Dispenses medication as directed. Educates patient/family about diagnosis procedures, medications, nutrition, and maintenance of health and wellness.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.
Education Requirements

Louisiana Registered Nurse license, IV certification and ACLS are required.

Experience

At least one year of med surg experience is preferred.
