Job summary

TTUHSC in Texas is seeking a Registered Nurse to provide professional nursing care in a correctional clinic setting, including exams, treatments, and medication administration, with strong emphasis on patient safety and EMR documentation. The role offers shift differential for night and weekend hours; applicants must hold a Texas RN license.

New graduates must pass NCLEX-RN on the first attempt; ER experience is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Current RN License in the State of Texas or able to transfer
  • Graduated from an approved accredited nursing program; NCLEX-RN on first attempt for new grads
  • No experience required

Responsibilities

  • Communicates patient data and documents interventions using EMR to support decision-making and improve patient care.
  • Assists with or performs exams, assessments and procedures and documents intervention in EMR; operates equipment for exams, treatments and procedures.
  • Administers or assists with administration and documentation of medications (oral, parenteral, IV) and oxygen therapies.
  • Administers or assists with other medication administration as needed.
  • Screens sick call requests within 24 hours and provides nursing sick calls to offenders from psychiatric services; performs nursing clinics.
  • Responds to emergencies and performs advanced technical procedures; monitors and avoids hypothermia, hypovolemia, environmental exposure.
  • Assists in admissions, discharges and transfers; prepares equipment for examinations and procedures.
  • Maintains knowledge of current issues and treatment modalities.

Employees in this classification perform responsible professional nursing care at a unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Responsible for the care and treatment of patients in accordance with accepted nursing and medical standards administrative nursing personnel. Supervises other subordinate clinic personnel. Work is performed under correctional clinic conditions; position requires a high degree of contact with patients, other clinic personnel and outside professionals.

Work is performed under correctional clinic conditions; position requires a high degree of contact with patients, other clinic personnel and outside professionals.

Major/Essential Functions
  • Communicates patient data and documents interventions using the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) to support decision‑making to improve patient care.
  • Assists with or performs exams, assessments and procedures and documents intervention in EMR procedures. Operates necessary equipment and instruments for examinations, treatments, and procedures.
  • Administer or assist with administration and documentation of oral, parenteral, or IV medications, oxygen, and/or nebulizer treatments.
  • Administer or assist with administration or documentation of medications.
  • Screen sick call requests within 24 hour of receipt. Provides nursing sick calls to offenders from psychiatric services and the Trusty Camp. Perform nursing clinic in the Primary Care Clinic or on the pods.
  • Responds to emergencies. Performs advanced technical procedures and skills. Avoid Hypothermia, Hypovolemia, and Environmental exposure.
  • Assist in admissions, discharges and transfers.
  • Prepares and operates necessary equipment and instruments for examinations, treatments, and procedures.
  • Maintains working knowledge of current issues and treatment modalities.

In addition to the base position compensation, we offer shift differential pay for night and weekend shifts:

Registered Nurse Shift Differential
  • Day Shift Employees: Earn an extra $4.00 per hour for shifts worked on Saturday and Sunday.
  • Night Shift Employees:
    • Earn an extra $4.00 per hour for shifts worked Monday through Friday.
    • Earn an extra $8.00 per hour for shifts worked on Saturday and Sunday.
Occasional Duties

Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Required Qualifications
  • Current RN License in the State of Texas, or ability to transfer license to Texas, or scheduled to complete a program of nursing within 120 days of applying for a position.
  • Graduated from an approved accredited nursing program. New graduates must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX- RN) on the first attempt.
  • No experience required.
Preferred Qualifications

Two (2) years experience working in an Emergency Room.
