Job summary

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lamesa is seeking a registered nurse to deliver professional care on the Lamesa Smith Unit. You will administer medications, document patient data, and support care decisions using the EMR system.

The role requires a Texas RN license (or eligibility) and NCLEX-RN on first attempt for new grads, with no prior experience required. Shifts are 12 hours, days, full-time, with comprehensive benefits.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Provide professional nursing care to patients at the Lamesa Smith Unit.
• Administer medications as ordered and monitor dosages, reactions, and contraindications.
• Document patient data using EMR to support decision making and improve care.
• Prepare and operate equipment and instruments for examinations and procedures.
• Complete required documentation for incoming/outgoing patients, including histories.
• Inspect and monitor equipment; maintain patient care areas, equipment and supplies.
• Serve as relief charge nurse when needed and delegate tasks to junior staff.
• Communicate with physicians or APPs and report significant incidents.

Position Description

Employees in this classification perform responsible professional nursing care at a unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Responsible for the care and treatment of patients in accordance with accepted nursing and medical standards. Supervises other subordinate clinic personnel. Work is performed under correctional clinic conditions; the position requires a high degree of contact with patients, other clinic personnel and outside professionals.

Major/Essential Functions

• Responsible for providing care to patients at the Lamesa Smith Unit.
• Administers medications as ordered, adheres to facility policy and procedure of medication administration and maintains knowledge of appropriate dosages, reactions and contraindications of medications.
• Communicates patient data using Electronic Medical Record (EMR) to support decision-making and improve patient care.
• Prepares and operates necessary equipment and instruments for examinations, treatments, and procedures.
• Assists in completing required documentation for incoming/outgoing patients, including obtaining accurate patient histories.
• Inspects and monitors equipment; ensures maintenance of patient care areas, equipment and supplies, and medication refrigerator.
• Serves as a relief charge nurse when needed, delegating tasks to lower level nursing staff.
• Communicates with Physicians or Advanced Practice Providers as needed, and reports when transferring patients to another unit or hospital. Notifies provider(s) of any significant incidents.

Required Qualifications

• Current RN License in the State of Texas, or ability to transfer license to Texas, or scheduled to complete a program of nursing within 120 days of applying. Graduated from an approved accredited nursing program. New graduates must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX‑RN) on the first attempt.
• No experience required.
