Job Levels and Responsibilities
  1. Clinical Nurse I

    Integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet patient and family needs. Assists the healthcare team with prevention of illness and injury, wellness maintenance, and comfort provision. Provides direction, education, and begins to develop leadership skills at the unit level. Delivers and documents age-specific care based on medical orders and a multidisciplinary plan of care. Safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and interactions.

  2. Clinical Nurse II

    Demonstrates mastery of clinical skills and applies knowledge to a specific patient population. Assists the healthcare team with prevention, wellness, and comfort. Recognizes changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately. Mobilizes resources to meet patient and family needs. Provides direction, education, and assumes leadership responsibilities at the unit level. Delivers and documents age-specific care based on medical orders and a multidisciplinary plan of care. Safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and interactions.

  3. Clinical Nurse III

    Demonstrates clinical knowledge at the unit level and applies it to a specific patient population. Assists the healthcare team with prevention, wellness, and comfort. Anticipates changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately. Serves as a role model, providing direction and education. Delivers and documents age-specific care based on medical orders and a multidisciplinary plan of care. Safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and interactions.

Licensure, Certification, and Experience Requirements
  • Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible/compact state.
  • AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent for continued employment.
  • Experience: Clin I: N/A; Clin II: 12-24 months RN experience; Clin III: 3 years clinical experience.
  • Preferred: Experience as LPN, nursing assistant, or care partner; academic healthcare experience; experience with similar patient populations.
Education and Training
  • Diploma or Associate’s Degree from an approved nursing program.
  • All RNs without a Bachelor’s must enroll in an RN to BSN program within two years and complete it within five years unless grandfathered.
  • Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing; certification in specialty area.
Additional Requirements
  • Follows documented orders and practices within Virginia nursing regulations.
  • Guided by the ANA Code of Ethics, national standards, and hospital policies.
  • Organizes work, delegates, and supervises others.
  • Work all shifts, including weekends and holidays; schedules may vary.
  • Serves various age groups as appropriate.
  • Physical and mental requirements include lifting, exposure to hazards, prolonged standing, reasoning, communication, and handling a fast-paced environment.
