Job summary

The State of South Dakota's Department of Corrections – Correctional Health in Pierre, SD is seeking a dedicated Registered Nurse to provide clinical care within the women's prison. You will document nursing care, administer medications, and collaborate on treatment plans while maintaining confidentiality.

Qualifications

• Current, valid Registered Nurse license issued by the South Dakota Board of Nursing or a state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
• Ability to work day shifts and flexible schedules including weekends/holidays.

Responsibilities

• Document nursing care and maintain accurate inmate medical records.
• Transcribe reports at change of shifts.
• Provide standardized patient education within established nursing guidelines.
• Preserve confidentiality.
• Provide physical care, administer medications, collaborate on treatment plans, infection control, crisis intervention, triage offenders, and patient/staff instruction.
• Assist physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners with minor medical and surgical procedures.
• Ensure ordering and restocking of medications and supplies.
• Occasionally assist in restraining an offender for medical reasons.
• Observe and report the condition of offenders during triage, sick call and emergencies.
• Promote safety and security of the clinical environment and proper handling of contraband and supplies.
• Operate clinical equipment and report any safety violations.

Shift: Day shift, 6:00 am to 6:30 pm (may require any shift, weekends, and holidays)

Responsibilities

• Document nursing care and maintain accurate inmate medical records.
• Transcribe reports at change of shifts.
• Provide standardized patient education within established nursing guidelines.
• Preserve confidentiality.
• Provide physical care, administer medications, collaborate on treatment plans, employ infection‑control measures, provide crisis intervention, interview and triage offenders, and perform patient and staff instruction.
• Assist physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners with minor medical and surgical procedures.
• Ensure ordering and restocking of medications and supplies.
• Occasionally assist in restraining an offender for medical reasons.
• Observe and report the physical and emotional condition of offenders during triage, sick call and emergency situations.
• Perform physical and emotional assessments of offenders during triage, sick‑call and emergency situations, employing basic nursing and assessment protocols.
• Promote safety and security of the clinical environment, including careful handling of contraband and counting necessary items such as syringes, needles, narcotics, instruments, and key control.
• Operate clinical equipment available in the assigned work unit.
• Notify supervisor of any security or safety violations via report writing.
• Attend required training programs such as Basic Training Academy and Threat Pattern Recognition self‑defense course.

Qualifications

• Current, valid Registered Nurse license issued by the South Dakota Board of Nursing or a state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).

Required Competencies

• Ability to effectively treat patients daily in a variety of settings.

• Ability to respond to emergency situations involving offenders and/or medical conditions.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to read and comprehend English.
• Ability to communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing.

• Attention to detail and ability to follow instructions.
• Ability to work a variety of shifts on a full‑time basis.

Preferred Qualifications

• Correctional nursing experience.
• Acute care or long‑term nursing experience.
• Charge nurse and/or supervisory experience.

Conditions of Employment

The SD DOC is committed to a drug‑free workplace. All job offers are contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation, urine drug screen, and the candidate’s ability to perform the essential functions of the position. Selected individuals must also successfully complete a written and practical self‑defense exam and CPR to AHA guidelines, as well as TB screening. Individuals may have the opportunity to carry Oleoresin Capsicum (OC/pepper spray) if desired, with required training and exposure.

The SD DOC is exempt from the Civil Service Act and eligible for Veterans’ Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
