Position Overview:

As a Registered Nurse (RN) in the Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR) at UVA Health, you will provide specialized care for adult cardiac, thoracic, and vascular surgical patients. You will work alongside a dedicated team of surgeons and healthcare professionals in a state-of-the-art environment, supporting complex surgical procedures such as minimally invasive surgeries, endovascular procedures, heart and lung transplants, mechanical circulatory support, and advanced aortic surgeries.

Our CVOR is equipped with 6 state-of-the-art operating rooms, including 2 Hybrid ORs. You will have the opportunity to work with nationally recognized surgeons and be part of a dynamic and innovative team providing life-saving care for a diverse patient population, including pediatric and adult patients with congenital and cardiovascular conditions.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Perioperative Care: Deliver high-quality, evidence-based care to patients undergoing complex cardiac, thoracic, and vascular surgeries, ensuring the best possible outcomes.
  2. Intraoperative Patient Care: Collaborate with the surgical team to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate the intraoperative care plan, considering handoff information and patient/family input.
  3. Operating Room Preparation: Prepare the CV operating room by assembling equipment, supplies, and implants, ensuring functionality and availability for the procedure.
  4. Surgical Procedure Support: Demonstrate proficiency in assisting with open and closed heart procedures, ensuring safe positioning, injury prevention, and optimal surgical exposure.
  5. Safety Protocols: Participate in Universal Protocol and surgical timeout procedures, including fire risk assessments and post-procedure pauses for patient safety.
  6. Cardiopulmonary and ECMO Support: Maintain knowledge of cardiopulmonary bypass and ECMO, assisting with deployment and management when needed.
  7. Instrument and Medication Verification: Follow protocols for instrument counts and verify medications, concentrations, and expiration dates on the sterile field.
  8. Patient and Family-Centered Care: Provide compassionate, culturally sensitive care addressing the needs of patients and families perioperatively.
  9. Continuous Learning and Improvement: Stay informed on latest practices, share knowledge with the team, and support ongoing professional development.
Qualifications:
  • Current RN licensure in Virginia
  • BLS and ACLS certification
  • Preferred: Experience in cardiovascular or cardiothoracic surgery nursing
  • Strong knowledge of surgical procedures, instruments, and safety protocols
  • Ability to work effectively in high-pressure environments
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Compassionate, patient-centered approach
