Surgical/Trauma Intensive Care Unit (SICU) - 34-bed unit
The SICU specializes in complex care for adult patients requiring surgical interventions, including Trauma Surgery, Transplant Surgery, Acute Care Surgery, and Oncologic Surgery. As the region’s only adult Level 1 trauma center, it is equipped to handle critical trauma patients needing resuscitation and specialized nursing care. The unit also cares for solid organ transplant recipients and complex oncologic, hepatobiliary, and general surgery patients referred nationwide.
The majority of patients are in critical condition but typically stabilize within 24-48 hours. Care focuses on stabilizing cardio-pulmonary functions, maintaining circulatory volume, and managing pain. The SICU receives 5-8 admissions daily, requiring a multidisciplinary team approach to ensure patient readiness for transfer to surgical floors. The SICU nurse plays a vital role in this process.
