Job Description

General Summary

Under limited supervision, this role is responsible for assessing patients, including developing, evaluating, and modifying the plan of care. Provides care to patients through therapeutic use of self, the nursing process, environment/technology, and collaboration with healthcare team members, according to established standards. Performs complex patient-care procedures specific to area of expertise. Functions as part of the Care Team and Support Team, working collaboratively to achieve patient outcomes as outlined in the pathway and plan of care. Patients include all age groups (Infant through Older Adult, as specified in Performance Standards).

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Provides care to unit-specific and/or hospital-based patient populations; practices independently with solid knowledge and clinical skills; actively advances own practice, integrating evidence-based care.
  • Is accountable to patients and families for care processes and outcomes during episodes of care. Also accountable to peers for practice advancement and to the nurse manager for overall performance.
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary team members to plan and coordinate care, addressing patient and family needs. Acts as a clinical resource as needed.
  • Participates in initiatives aimed at improving Nursing Sensitive Quality Indicators (NSQI).
  • Ensures compliance with standards and supports regulatory activities.
  • Supports leadership and charge nurse decisions; may serve as primary coordinating nurse when required.
  • Models safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable, patient-centered care consistent with unit operations.
  • Follows AACN guidelines for a Healthy Work Environment, promoting communication, collaboration, effective decision-making, recognition, leadership, and staffing; actively participates as a team member.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Patient Safety

  • Ensures patient safety in all job functions and participates in safety initiatives.
  • Acts to correct observed risks to patient safety.
  • Reports adverse events and near misses appropriately.
  • Identifies potential risks in processes, procedures, and devices, communicating concerns to management.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Current RN licensure in Maryland or eligible via Compact agreements.
  • Associate’s degree required; BSN preferred.
  • At least 1 year of RN experience required.
  • American Heart Association BLS certification required upon hire.
  • Must meet unit-specific certification requirements (PALS, ACLS, NRP).

  • Maintains competencies for patient care; committed to professional development. Demonstrates strong clinical skills.
  • Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Works effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficient in computer systems for managing patient information.
  • Supports team-building efforts and demonstrates versatility within the PRN RN program.
  • Provides age-specific and population-specific care, understanding growth and development principles.

Compensation

  • Pay Range: FLATRATE: $45
