Job Summary

The Behavioral Emergency Rapid Response Team (BERRT) Nurse is a clinical expert specializing in psychiatric nursing care for hospitalized patients outside of behavioral health units with behavioral, psychiatric, and mental health disorders. The BERRT nurse uses proactive interventions and a holistic caring approach for all patients.

Responsibilities
  1. Provide age-specific, direct patient care based on medical orders and a multidisciplinary plan of care.
  2. Administer prescribed medications safely, identifying incompatibilities and interactions.
  3. Assist the healthcare team in preventing illness and injury, maintaining wellness, and providing comfort.
  4. Recognize changes in patient conditions and intervene appropriately.
  5. Document care accurately and thoroughly.
  6. Lead and educate team members, assuming leadership responsibilities at the unit level.
  7. Follow documented physician/provider orders and practice within Virginia nursing regulations.
  8. Adhere to the ANA Code of Ethics and established policies and procedures.
  9. Work all shifts, including weekends and holidays, with schedules established by the Nurse Manager.
Qualifications
  • Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible/compact state.
  • For continued employment: AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent.
  • Experience: Clin I – N/A; Clin II – 12 to 24 months RN experience; Clin III – 3+ years clinical experience.
  • Education: Diploma or Associate's Degree from an approved nursing program. Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  • Specialty certifications preferred for Clin III.
  • Physical ability to lift 20-50 lbs and perform activities like standing, walking, bending, and reaching.
Additional Requirements
  • Work all shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Practice in accordance with Virginia nursing laws, ANA standards, and institutional policies.
  • Supervise and delegate tasks to team members as appropriate.
  • Handle a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities.
Physical and Mental Demands

Includes lifting, exposure to hazardous substances, prolonged standing and sitting, and cognitive skills such as reasoning and problem-solving.
