Job Description

Purpose & Scope:

The registered professional nurse is responsible for the direct and indirect total nursing care of their assigned patients across all levels. The RN supervises assigned personnel and must be knowledgeable about department and hospital policies related to nursing care. The role requires strong interpretive, interactive, consultative, management, and supervisory skills. Effective communication, both written and verbal, is essential, along with manual dexterity skills.

Education:

Bachelor's in Nursing Required

Experience:

At least one year of nursing/patient care experience in an acute care setting is required.

Certification/Licensure:

Licensed as a Registered Nurse by the Virginia Department of Health Professions or holding a Compact State Licensure in Nursing is required.

BLS certification is required. Nurses on designated units must maintain specific certifications. New nurses or recent graduates have one year to fulfill specialty certification requirements below.

Required certifications include:

  • ACLS for ED, ICU, CVICU, Cardiac Cath Lab, Cardiopulmonary Rehab, Bronch Suite, Interventional Radiology, Radiology Safety Nurses, Step-down Units (3A, 3B, 4B), 6A, 6B, 7A, Labor and Delivery, Hemodialysis, Respiratory Therapy, Float pool, GI Unit, and PACU.
  • PALS for PACU (Pediatric Nurses) and ED.
  • NRP for NICU, Mother Baby, and Labor and Delivery.
  • De-escalation training for BHU and ED.

Per policy, ACLS or PALS certification demonstrates competence in BLS skills according to American Heart Association Guidelines. Current ACLS or PALS certification fulfills the BLS requirement; separate BLS certification is not necessary.
