Job description

Overview

The ASC Operating Room RN is directly responsible for performing the roles and responsibilities of the circulating and/or scrub nurse in the operating room. The RN will provide direct patient care in accordance with ASC policies and AORN standards. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: maintaining a safe surgical environment; fiscal stewardship of supplies, materials and resources; continuing education for self and new employees; active involvement in quality and process improvement activities. The OR RN in the ASC is part of a team environment.

Responsibilities

  1. Practices consistently with applicable state nursing practice regulations, applicable ASC policies and procedures, and the ANA Code of Ethics.
  2. Ensures proper equipment is available and ready for surgical cases.
  3. Ensures safety measures including time out process, safe patient positioning, required surgical documentation, and surgical count process are appropriately performed.
  4. Assists anesthesia and surgeon with needs of the patient.
  5. Identifies opportunities for improved OR efficiencies.
  6. Communicates with colleagues professionally, with commitment to maintaining a respectful workplace culture and a safe learning environment.
  7. Complies with policies, procedures, and area-specific expectations related to maintaining a safe environment of care. Initiates reporting or action when needed to address safety concerns.
  8. Complies with policies, procedures and area-specific expectations related to:
  9. medication safety
  10. patient identification and specimen labeling activities
  11. documentation of patient information and patient care activities
  12. dependability, attendance, and scheduling
  13. Participates in staff meetings, required learning, attestation, competency, and training activities according to area-specific and organizational expectations. Independently monitors email and other communications as necessary to meet these expectations.
  14. Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications

  • Graduate from an accredited Nursing Program required.
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred with at least 1 year of experience in an ASC.
  • Associate Degree (ADN) prepared nurses with 2 years’ experience.
  • Prior ASC or OR experience a must.

Required Licensure/Certifications

– Licensed Registered Nurse with New Hampshire eligibility
– Basic Life Support (BLS) Certificate required
– CNOR Certification Preferred
– Advanced Life Support (ACLS) within 6 months of hire date.
– Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) within 6 months of hire date.
