Job summary

South Carolina Department of Corrections is seeking a qualified nurse to provide care in designated correctional clinics. You will administer medications, perform health screenings, document care, and coordinate nursing services to meet inmate health needs.

You will also transcribe physician orders, maintain records, participate in chronic disease clinics, and collaborate with correctional staff to ensure safety and appropriate care.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
• Active nursing license in the state of South Carolina or a qualifying compact state.
• Basic Life Support certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.

Responsibilities

• Administer and document medication as ordered by the physician in the correctional setting.
• Conduct health screenings during sick call using standing orders or MD referrals.
• Document all health care rendered on medical records.
• Assist in planning and coordination of nursing services to meet inmate health needs.
• Transcribe MD orders from medical records.
• Transfer medical records with documentation and medications at inmate transfer.
• Perform clinical treatments & procedures using universal precautions.
• Maintain 40 hours of in-service education per year, including CPR and mandatory in-services.
• Provide emergency treatment to inmates and employees.
• Participate in employee health issues (TB screening, Hepatitis B, flu shots, post-exposure assessment).
• Participate in chronic disease clinics and collaborate with correctional professionals to address inmate needs.
• Collect and process lab specimens for transport to laboratory.
• Assist Physician as needed.

The salary amounts represent the minimum and maximum ranges based on years of current agency service plus incentive structures at SCDC. It is important to note that not all individuals may qualify for the highest tier of base pay adjustments and incentives.

Responsible to the Nurse Manager for nursing care provided in a designated correctional clinic or specialized area in compliance with medical plans, policies, and orders for patient care and treatment.

Duties Include

• Administer and document medication as ordered by the physician in the correctional setting.
• Conduct health screenings during sick call using approved standing orders or making appropriate MD referrals.
• Document all health care rendered on medical records.
• Assist in planning and coordination of nursing services required to meet the total health care needs of the patient.
• Transcribe all MD orders from medical records.
• Transfer medical records with appropriate documentation and medication at time of inmate transfer.
• Perform clinical treatments & procedures using universal precautions in all areas of practice.
• Maintain 40 hours of in-service education per year, including mandatory in-services and CPR certification.
• Provide emergency treatment to inmates and employees.
• Participate in employee health issues as directed, i.e., TB screening, Hepatitis B injections, flu injections, and post exposure assessment.
• Participate in chronic disease clinics.
• Collaborate with other correctional professionals to assure social, psychological and security needs of inmates are met.
• Collect and process lab specimens for transport to laboratory.
• Assist Physician as needed.

Majority Of The Institutions Operate On The Following Shifts

6:00am - 7:00pm

6:00pm - 7:00am

Shift Differentials

$5.00 an hour on weekends

$1.75 an hour on nights

Minimum And Additional Requirements

State of South Carolina minimum requirements:

Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.

SCDC Minimum Requirements

Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.

Must have an active nursing license in the state of South Carolina or qualifying compact state.

Must have Basic Life Support certification or be able to obtain within 30 days of hire.
