Job Summary
Location: Methodist Corporate Office

Work Schedule: 4 scheduled days during the week (Monday-Friday), 9am to 5:30pm
We are seeking experienced RNs with a minimum of 3 years of inpatient hospital or pre-op experience. In this role, you will communicate directly with patients and their families over the phone, providing personalized care tailored to each patient's unique needs. You'll conduct comprehensive patient assessments over the phone to identify and document any potential surgical risks. Please note that this position is solely phone-based and does not involve hands-on or direct patient care
Responsibilities
Essential Functions
- Perform preadmission functions in compliance with department guidelines.
- Provide appropriate care specific to the age of the customer/patient, to ensure understanding and comfort level of treatment as outlined in the Population Specific Criteria.
- Demonstrate ability to identify opportunities for and give individualized customer service/patient care according to customer/patient needs.
- Document clinical information: admission history, medications, allergy, education and VTE risk.
- Provide preadmission education to patient or family.
- Verify and update demographic data.
- Follow recommended workflow and documentation guidelines for department, ensuring accuracy of information entered in chart.
- Make decisions following based practice, research and pre-surgery nurse higher order critical thinking skills.
- Perform assessments to determine patient needs.
- Include all relevant data from the patient/significant other(s) in the assessment as appropriate.
- Prioritize data collection according to immediate needs.
- Update medical record based on information obtained.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with all members of the health care team.
- Develop and maintain the plan of care to address nursing care needs for optimum outcomes.
- Collaborate with providers and other clinical disciplines as appropriate.
- Provide teaching specific to the patient.
- Ensure plan reflects continuing care needs, providing referrals as needed.
- Notify surgery teams if there are circumstances that would postpone procedure.
- Implement interventions consistent with the established plan of care in a safe and appropriate manner. (Professional Models of Care).
- Follow nursing protocols and standards of care.
- Maintain a current knowledge of nursing practices.
- Performs technical skills competently and independently to assure patient safety (autonomy).
- Prioritize patients by analyzing acuity, procedure and location.
- Is accountable to learn new skills and equipment within areas' specifications and time frame.
- Demonstrates correct and safe technique in the use of equipment according to specific product information and policy and procedure manuals.
- Follows appropriate procedure for obtaining and returning or cleaning/disposing of equipment and supplies.
- Initiate actions to correct, prevent and/or minimize risk.
- Complete appropriate report form (e.g., variance/incident report, patient concern report, maintenance request, etc.). based on issue.
- Work with management to resolve outstanding issues.
- Work within the scope of practice as defined by Nurse Practice Act.
- Fiscally accountable.
- Acts professionally responsible for human and other resources.
- Charges accurately for use of supplies and equipment according to policy.
- Good stewards of our resources.
- Recognizes, understands and communicates use of presurgery nurse’s decision making impacts the customers and hospital’s financial health.
- Collects clinical history and evaluates existing diagnostic findings to initiate clinical protocols for additional diagnostic testing by interviewing patients.
- Identifies existing advanced directives and assesses wish for development of advanced directive.
- Facilitates physician orders.
- Follows anesthesia guidelines.
- Demonstrates behaviors that align with hospital core values such as:
- Uses descriptive language that does not negatively label patients/customers or their families and holds other team members accountable to do the same.
- Demonstrates commitment to excellence through ongoing education by attending and participating in staff meetings (minimum 50%), process improvement efforts, and educational offerings.
- Maintain knowledge of facility guidelines and other departments to compliment surgical care.

Education
- Successful completion of annual mandatory education requirements.
- Associates Degree from an accredited school of nursing required.
- Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
Experience
- Minimum of three years medical/surgical experience required.
- Experience in multiple areas of nursing practice preferred.
License/Certifications
- Current valid Registered Nurse (RN) license, valid compact multistate license, or a temporary permit while awaiting licensure required.
- Surgical certification preferred.
