POSITION SUMMARY

The Registered Nurse is a member of the interdisciplinary team working in collaboration with the Physician. The Registered Nurse utilizes the nursing care process consistent with their license and/or certification, including initiation of culturally competent continuum of care in inpatient, outpatient, and community settings. The RN is responsible for overseeing coordination of the interdisciplinary plan of care and ensuring consistency with the medical treatment plan. The patient care process includes assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation of patient outcomes, education, and empowerment for patient empowerment.

JOB DESCRIPTION
  • Assessment – orderly process of identifying, gathering, and organizing subjective and objective data pertaining to the patient/family/significant other, including physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and cultural aspects.
  • Planning – organized step that identifies actual or potential problems and desired outcomes (goals) that result in a documented plan of care, providing direction for the patient, family, and interdisciplinary team.
  • Intervention – specific interventions or orders implemented consistently with the plan of care and medical treatment plan.
  • Evaluation – step that determines the effectiveness of interventions in achieving the plan of care and makes conclusions concerning achievement or lack of achievement of desired outcomes. This may initiate reassessment and revisions to problems, goals, plan of care, and interventions, providing documentation of required actions. Based upon findings identified during assessment and reassessment, patients have problems identified and prioritized relative to biophysical, psychological, environmental, self‑care, educational, and social status; goals are identified consistent with the problem to provide direction for patient care and health promotion; education is consistent with the identified problem and associated goals and is seen as critical to creating an environment that promotes patient empowerment.

Employee may be required to perform Limited Laboratory Services, including patient identification and preparation for specimen collection, processing samples for testing, performing required quality control testing and instrument maintenance, function checks, monitoring, recording, and reporting test results to clinicians (including critical values), and maintaining competency/certification of these tasks and duties.

Licensed and registered care providers are responsible for utilizing the care process relative to their scope of practice and knowledge base; they may document the assessment, plan, intervention, and evaluation. All patient care activities are administered according to standards, procedural guidelines, and organizational policy.

The Registered Nurse actively supports performance improvement initiatives and provides leadership to other members of the patient care team. By participating in educational activities, the RN assumes responsibility for continued professional and personal growth.

LOCATION SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
Emergency Room
  • 2 years medical/surgical and/or emergency room experience preferred.
  • ACLS required within 6 months of hire or transfer.
  • ATCN or TNCC required within 24 months of hire or transfer.
  • Minimum of 8 contact hours of education every year in basic trauma assessment, intervention, and stabilization.
  • Minimum of 8 contact hours of education every year in basic stroke assessment, intervention, and NIHSS to be completed by 6 months of hire and continuously maintained thereafter.
  • PALS or ENPC attained within 12 months of hire or transfer.
  • Current staff required to obtain CPI by 6/30/24; new hires or transfers required CPI within 6 months of hire and continuously maintained after.
Trauma Bay
  • Trauma experience required; 2 years preferred.
  • ACLS, PALS & ATCN required at time of hire.
Harmony Trauma/ICU
  • 2 years medical/surgical experience preferred; Critical care experience preferred.
  • ACLS required at time of hire.
  • ATCN required within 3 years from date of hire or transfer.
Intensive Care Unit (ICU/CTICU)
  • 2 years medical/surgical experience preferred; Critical care experience preferred.
  • ACLS required within 6 months of hire or transfer.
  • CCRN preferred.
Cardiovascular ICU (CVU)
  • 2 years critical care experience.
  • Cardiovascular ICU Experience Preferred.
  • ACLS required within 6 months of hire or transfer.
  • CCRN preferred.
Heart and Vascular Unit (HVU)
  • 2 years telemetry experience preferred.
  • ACLS required within 6 months of hire or transfer.
Harbor (PCU)
  • 2 years telemetry experience.
  • Experience Preferred.
  • ACLS required within 6 months of hire or transfer.
Medical/Surgical Experience Preferred Locations
  • 3 Pines/3 Central, 5 Harmony, 7 Harmony, 4 Michigan – Medical/Surgical Experience Preferred; ACLS required within 6 months of hire or transfer.
  • South/Meadow – Medical/Surgical Experience Preferred; ACLS required within 1 year of hire or transfer.
Med Surg/Cardiac/Stroke Care (2West/2 Pines, 6 Harmony)
  • Medical/Surgical Experience Preferred.
  • ACLS required within 6 months of hire or transfer.
Pre‑Admission Testing (PAT)
  • Medical/Surgical Experience Preferred; ACLS required within 6 months of hire or transfer.
Operating Room
  • Medical/surgical and operating room experience preferred. Effective 1/1/25, all new OR team members must scrub and/or learn to scrub during orientation within six months.
  • ACLS required by 12/31/24 for all RNs in the City OR.
  • CNOR preferred.
PACU/Same Day Surgery/Recovery Room
  • Critical Care or PACU experience required.
  • ACLS required at time of hire or transfer.
  • PALS required within 6 months of hire or transfer.
Intervention Radiology
  • 2 years medical/surgical experience preferred; interventional and critical care experience preferred.
  • ACLS required at time of hire or transfer.
  • PALS required within 1 year of hire or transfer.
Cath Lab
  • Critical care, emergency room, cath‑lab or telemetry experience preferred.
  • ACLS required at time of hire or transfer.
Endoscopy
  • 2 years medical/surgical experience preferred; endoscopy, telemetry, and critical care experience preferred.
  • ACLS required within 6 months of hire or transfer.
  • PALS, CCRN, and CGRN preferred.
Radiation Oncology (Cancer Center Institute)
  • Oncology experience preferred.
  • OCN preferred.
Medical Oncology Infusion Services (Cancer Center Institute)
  • Oncology experience preferred.
  • ONS Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Competency Provider required within 6 months of hire or transfer.
  • OCN preferred.
Structural Heart
  • 2 years experience in cardiology.
Able To Perform
  • Phlebotomy
  • EKG
Vascular Access Team
  • 2–3 years of acute care nursing experience.
  • USGIV insertion.
  • Competency in vascular access placement.
  • PICC/Midline insertion preferred.
  • Prior experience on a dedicated vascular access or infusion team preferred.
  • BLS required at time of hire or transfer.
  • Certification in Infusion Therapy or Vascular Access preferred.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION / LICENSE
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; BSN preferred.
  • Nurses hired without BSN must be enrolled in a BSN program within 1 year and complete it within 3 years.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of New Jersey or a current multi‑state license required.
  • BLS required.
  • Valid NJ Driver's License required for all employees in the Adult and Child Partial Programs.
EXPERIENCE

Proficiency in clinical applications preferred at time of hire; incumbents within the position will be trained appropriately and then required to achieve this skill within 30–60 days from date of hire.
