  • Experience with electronic medical records is expected.
  • Fluency in English is required; Spanish language skills are a plus.

MISSION STATEMENT

George Mark Children’s House provides compassionate care to enhance quality of life for children with serious medical conditions and their families.

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Director of Clinical Programs, the Registered Nurse will work collaboratively within the Nursing Department and will provide direct patient care and assist in the coordination of patient care services using the framework of the GMCH Mission and the philosophy of pediatric palliative care. This is an hourly, non-exempt part‑time 60% (24 hours/week) position. We are hiring for the 11 pm‑7:30 am shift. It will include rotating weekends and holidays.

Essential Functions: Clinical/Technical
  • At the direction of the patient’s primary care physician, the Medical Director and the Director of Clinical Programs, provide and coordinate quality palliative care to patients/families, including nursing services, medication administration, treatments, diagnostic and preventative procedures.
  • In coordination with IDT (Inter-disciplinary Team) develop, implement, evaluate, and update the plan of care for each patient/family.
  • Assess patients and report to the managing physician reactions to treatments and medications, as well as changes in the patient’s physical or emotional condition.
  • Assess and respond to clinical and psychosocial needs of patients and families.
  • Perform nursing procedures such as central line dressing changes, mediport access, GT feeds, respiratory treatments, and suctioning.
  • Calculate medications and fluids with 100% accuracy.
  • Assess pain and manage symptoms associated with pediatric patients requiring end-of-life care.
  • Coordinates and transcribes patients’ orders with accuracy.
  • Coordinate nursing care with other team members including nursing staff, psychosocial staff, pharmacist, Medical Director, attending physicians, and various community agencies and resources.
  • Supervise LVNs, CNAs, and volunteers.
  • Participate in admissions, transfers, and discharges.
  • Protect patients and employees by adhering to infection control policies and protocols, proper handling of medications, and controlled substance regulations.
  • Ensure proper use of DME and other equipment by following manufacturers’ instructions; acts as liaison with DME providers as needed.
  • Maintain current clinical knowledge of pediatric palliative care practices through ongoing education and attendance of in-service training sessions and regular clinical meetings.
Essential Functions: Patient Interaction
  • Actively participate in the provision of clinical and psychosocial care for GMCH children- and families.
  • Ongoing assessment of patient and family needs; clear communication and delegation to interdisciplinary team as appropriate. Educate and support patients and families regarding pain and symptom management and end of life progression.
  • Communicate with patient/family regarding any changes in condition or plan of care.
Essential Functions: Team Communication
  • Document medical interventions and maintain accurate clinical records in the electronic medical record.
  • Attend scheduled Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) meetings when possible.
  • Demonstrate clear communication with patient, family, and hospital staff if patient is transferred.
  • Maintain patient confidence and protect GMCH operations by adhering to HIPAA regulations.
  • Check GMCH email regularly in order to be apprised of House business and professional tasks and responsibilities.

  • Perform tasks in a culturally sensitive manner without regard to any protected category as defined by federal, state or local law.
  • Provide House tours as requested.
  • Utilize GMCH resources in a cost-effective manner.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area to reduce the likelihood of health and safety hazards.
  • Effectively cope with personal, psychosocial, and bereavement challenges related to job duties.
  • Maintain professional boundaries within the scope of practice.
  • Attend in-service trainings and staff meetings.
  • Adhere to all state regulations regarding professional license.
  • Report to work on time for scheduled hours.
  • Understand and adhere to GMCH compliance standards as they appear in the GMCH Employee Manual, GMCH Policies and Procedures Manuals, and GMCH Injury and Illness Prevention Program.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • BSN preferred
  • Current California Registered Nurse license without limitations is required
  • Current BLS/CPR certification
  • A minimum of 2 years of acute or critical care pediatrics required
  • End of life experience preferred
  • Ability to communicate accurately and concisely using both written and verbal skills
  • Ability to work independently to manage a caseload of patients
  • Ability to access, input, and retrieve information from an electronic system
  • Knowledge of office procedures and office equipment
  • Possess fluency in English
  • Possess fluency in Spanish or other language (preferred)
  • Perform other duties as assigned
PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Working conditions in the interior of GMCH are clean, well-lit and free from extremes of temperature and humidity. Ability to sit, climb, reach, stand and bend, have use of both legs and hands, possess the ability to have broad range of wrist/arm motion. Ability to grasp/hold objects and tools. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. alone and up to 75 lbs. with assistance. Hearing sufficient to understand conversations, both in person and on the telephone. Reasonable accommodations will be made for some physical demands and mental demands for otherwise qualified individuals who require and request such accommodations.
