Job summary

University of California - San Francisco is seeking a Clinical Nurse II in Outpatient Oncology to lead and deliver direct adult patient care, with a focus on Head & Neck oncology. You will apply oncology knowledge across the care continuum, educate patients and families, and collaborate with an interdisciplinary team in a fast-paced outpatient setting.

Qualifications

• Minimum three (3) years of total RN experience.
• Minimum one (1) year of oncology nursing experience within the last 3 years, including care for patients receiving chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, or biologic agents.
• Minimum one (1) year outpatient or ambulatory RN experience within the last two years.
• Demonstrated clinical judgment in assessment and management of oncology treatment-related symptoms, education, and care coordination.
• Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.
• Flexibility to perform other duties as operationally needed.

Responsibilities

• 75%: Use nursing knowledge in practice and infusion settings, including patient teaching, assessment, symptom management, and administration of treatments.
• 15%: Coordinate patient care with other specialties, track order completion, assist with referrals, and communicate plans to patients and families.
• 5%: Participate in orientation and training of new staff.
• 5%: Other duties as assigned.

Job description

The Outpatient Oncology Clinical Nurse II serves in a leadership role and delivers direct patient care to an adult Oncology outpatient population. This role will be focused on, but not limited to, Head & Neck Oncology patients. This nurse is experienced and highly skilled with an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the cancer disease process, the major treatment modalities, symptom management, supportive care, and patient education. At this operational level, the nurse proactively embraces the Oncology Nursing Society/Standards of Oncology Nursing practice to utilize the nursing process for assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation to provide safe, therapeutic care. The nurse utilizes an interdisciplinary approach across the continuum of care with adherence to National Patient Safety Goals set forth by regulatory requirements. The nurse is recognized and utilized as a clinical resource and demonstrates investment in the overall forward movement of the unit and the organization.

Clinical Responsibilities

• 75%: Utilizes nursing clinical knowledge in the practice and infusion settings through:
  • Patient teaching
  • Assessment, triage and symptom management
  • Administration of ordered treatments including chemotherapy and immunotherapy
  • Monitoring of patient compliance with treatment plan
  • Documentation in the electronic health record
  • Following established safety, environment and infection control standards
• 15%: Collaborates with all members of the practice team in activities to coordinate patient care including:
  • Communicates with other specialties including non-oncology and ancillary (e.g. lab, imaging) services
  • Tracks order completion and follow-up
  • Assists patients with referrals to outside resources
  • Communicates plans to the patient and family
• 5%: Participates in the orientation and training of new staff
• 5%: Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

• Minimum three (3) years of total RN experience.
• Minimum one (1) year of oncology nursing experience (medical oncology, infusion oncology, or hematology/oncology) within the last 3 years, including experience caring for patients receiving chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and/or biologic agents and managing treatment-related toxicities, including immune-related adverse events.
• Minimum one (1) year outpatient or ambulatory RN experience within the last two (2) years.
• Demonstrated clinical judgment in the assessment and management of oncology treatment-related symptoms, patient education, and care coordination in the ambulatory setting.
• Demonstrated knowledge, abilities, and clinical judgment essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
• This position requires flexibilityto orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.
• This position requires flexibility to perform other duties as operationally needed.

Preferred Qualifications

• Two (2) or more years of recent oncology nursing experience in the last three (3) years, preferably caring for patients with head and neck cancers or other complex solid tumor populations.
• OCN Certification or other relevant specialty certification
• One (1) or more years of Telephone Triage nursing experience
• Minimum one (1) year inpatient RN experience
• Experience with Clinical Research/ Clinical Trials
• BSN

Licensure/Certifications

• Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of California
• Active American Heart Association CPR card
