Job summary

Indiana University Health is seeking a PREOP/GI Clinical RN to support patients and providers across the perioperative and procedural continuum. The role includes GI teching, patient preparation, circulating duties, bronchoscopy assistance, anesthesia support, and post-procedure recovery.

You will circulate GI and bronchoscopy cases, assist anesthesia with airway management, perform IV insertion, medication administration, documentation, and ensure safe, efficient workflow.

Qualifications

  • ASN required; BSN preferred.
  • Active RN license in Indiana or NLC RN license.
  • Graduated from a nationally accredited nursing program; exceptions possible with >2 years acute care experience.
  • BLS certification required; other advanced Life Support may be required per unit.

Responsibilities

  • Provide GI procedure support and assist the GI physician during procedures.
  • Maintain and manage endoscopy equipment and assist during procedural steps.
  • Perform scope cleaning and reprocessing per infection control guidelines.
  • Circulate GI, surgical, and bronchoscopy cases; assist anesthesia with airway management.
  • Complete accurate intra-procedural documentation and ensure safe, efficient workflow.
  • Prepare patients for GI, surgical, and bronchoscopy procedures; assist with nerve blocks and IVs.
  • Recover patients post-procedure and monitor as per sedation standards.

PREOP/GI Clinical Role – Position Summary & Responsibilities

The PREOP/GI role is a dynamic, multi‑functional clinical position responsible for supporting patients and providers throughout the perioperative and procedural continuum. Team members in this role function in several capacities, including GI technician support, patient preparation, circulating responsibilities, bronchoscopy assistance, anesthesia support, and post‑procedure recovery.

Primary Responsibilities
  • GI Procedure Support (GI Teching)
  • Assist the GI physician during procedures.
  • Maintain and manage endoscopy equipment, including holding scopes and assisting during procedural steps.
  • Perform scope cleaning and reprocessing tasks according to established standards and infection control guidelines.
Circulating Nurse/Tech Responsibilities
  • Circulate GI, surgical, and bronchoscopy cases as assigned.
  • Assist the anesthesiologist with airway management and patient positioning.
  • Complete accurate and detailed intra‑procedural documentation, including specimen collection and handling.
  • Ensure safe, efficient workflow and communication throughout procedures.
Pre‑Procedure Patient Preparation
  • Prepare patients for GI, surgical, and bronchoscopy procedures.
  • Assist anesthesia with peripheral nerve blocks, including:
    • Operating the ultrasound machine
    • Assisting the provider with catheter placement
    • Administering and pushing medications as ordered by the physician
  • Perform IV insertion, medication administration, collection of medical history, shaving (as applicable), and comprehensive physical assessment with appropriate documentation.
Post‑Procedure Recovery
  • Recover patients following GI procedures in accordance with sedation recovery standards.
  • Conduct sedation scoring, ongoing monitoring, and patient education.
  • Complete thorough recovery charting and ensure safe discharge readiness.

The registered professional clinical nurse (RN) is accountable and responsible for the provision and coordination of competent, evidence‑based care along the care continuum, which includes assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The clinical nurse participates in decision‑making, teaching, mentoring, and collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to advance the patient plan of care, achieve outcomes and enhance operational efficiency. The nurse adheres to the ANA Scope and Standards of Professional Nursing and the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements.

  • Requires an Associates of Nursing (ASN); Bachelors of Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • Requires an active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Indiana or an active Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) RN license.
  • Requires that the RN has graduated from a nationally accredited nursing program. Exceptions: Candidates who have not graduated from a nationally accredited program may be considered if they possess more than two years of acute care experience. Such exceptions are subject to review and approval by the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO).
  • Requires Basic Life Support certification through the AHA.
  • Other advanced Life Support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
