General Summary

This role is designed for new graduates or nurses with less than 12 months of experience. The nurse will utilize this time to learn the institution and nursing practice. It is expected that a nurse in this role successfully completes the Nurse Residency Program and Departmental Orientation. The nurse will practice using the institution’s care delivery and professional practice models, participate in activities to develop their practice, and support group practice goals at the unit level. They are accountable to patients, families, team members, and the nurse manager for care and work performance, adhering to Service Standards and the Nursing Mission, Vision, and Values.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following outlines the general nature and level of work for this role. It is not an exhaustive list of all duties.

Clinical Practice/Care Delivery
  • Focus on clinical practice and personal learning.
  • Apply evidence-based practices and access appropriate resources.
  • Follow unit protocols, documentation, and pathways.
  • Engage patients and families in care, following care delivery guidelines.
  • Conduct needs assessments, initiate and document education, and advocate for patients and families as needed.
  • Deliver safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable, and patient-centered care.
Professional Development
  • Access education for professional growth, focusing on competency completion.
  • Successfully complete orientation.
  • Maintain requirements for unit practice.
  • Assist with precepting students, unlicensed assistive personnel, or peers during isolated days.
  • Complete continuing education annually as per facility requirements.
Service/Quality
  • Familiarize with quality measures, safety goals, and facility plans.
  • Contribute to improving patient and staff satisfaction scores.
  • Participate in research, evidence-based practice, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Provide high-quality, safe, patient-centered care.
  • Maintain regulatory readiness and participate in tracer activities.
Patient Safety
  • Take action to address safety risks.
  • Report adverse events and near misses.
  • Follow policies and procedures consistently.
