Qualifications

  • Current RN license in Illinois required.
  • BLS certification required; NRP certification required or willingness to obtain within 6 months.
  • New grads starting 1/1/25 must earn BSN within 3 years.
  • Minimum of one year RN experience in OB/L&D or Gynecology preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide patient education and support during pregnancy and postpartum.

Job description

Overview

Riverside Healthcare is seeking a skilled and compassionate OB/GYN Registered Nurse (RN) to provide high-quality care to women in our obstetrics and gynecology department in Kankakee, Illinois. The OB/GYN RN will be responsible for caring for women during pregnancy, and postpartum periods, as well as providing care related to gynecological issues. In this role, you will work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurse practitioners, and other healthcare professionals to ensure positive patient outcomes and support women's health needs across various stages of life. Additionally, this position requires flexibility with assignments within professional scope/duties/licensure.

Essential Duties
  • Provide patient education and support during pregnancy, including routine assessments and educating patients on prenatal health practices.
  • Provide direct nursing care to women after labor and childbirth, ensuring both maternal and fetal well-being through careful monitoring and appropriate interventions.
  • Assist physicians after labor, delivery (vaginal and cesarean sections), and any emergent situations that may arise.
  • Administer pain management, including and other medications as needed after labor and delivery.
  • Provide postpartum nursing care to mothers, including monitoring for complications such as postpartum hemorrhage and providing education on breastfeeding, newborn care, and postpartum recovery.
  • Educate patients and their families on newborn care, postpartum self-care, and family planning.
  • Assist with the care of women undergoing gynecological procedures and surgeries, including pre-operative and post-operative care.
  • Support patients dealing with a range of gynecological conditions, including abnormal bleeding, endometriosis, and reproductive health concerns.
  • Educate and counsel patients on reproductive health, contraceptive options, and preventive care.
  • Provide support and guidance during emotionally challenging situations, such as pregnancy loss or complications.
  • Participate in Code OB, Code Blue, or other emergency protocols as needed.
  • Team member will maintain annual education requirements
Non-essential Duties
  • Participate in department meetings, continuing education sessions, and professional development opportunities.
  • Assist with unit management tasks, including maintaining cleanliness, restocking supplies, and preparing rooms for procedures.
  • Act as a mentor or preceptor to new nurses or nursing students.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and hospital outreach programs.
Responsibilities
Preferred Experience
  • Minimum of one year of experience as an RN in Obstetrics, Labor and Delivery, or Gynecology preferred.
  • Experience in acute care or high-risk OB units is a plus.
Required Licensure/Education
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program .
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Illinois.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification required (or willingness to obtain within 6 months).
  • *New Graduate RNs starting on or after 1/1/25 must earn Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) within 3 years of start date
Preferred Education:
  • BSN preferred*
  • Professional nursing certification in area of specialty preferred.

Exposure to:

  • Chemicals: Disinfectants, Betadine, room deodorizers, Alcohol. others per MSDS sheets Video Display Terminals: Average
  • Blood and Body Fluids: Frequent contact with IV devices and high potential for contact with contaminated body fluids (blood, vomitus, stool and amniotic fluid) does create a high risk.
  • However, appropriate usage of needleless IV system, universal precautions, and protective equipment should greatly minimize risk.
  • TB or Airborne Pathogens: Minimal risk exists, given the patient population; however, usage of protective clothing and universal precautions minimize any existing risk

Sensory requirements (speech, vision, smell, hearing, touch):

  • Speech: Required to communicate with patient, family and MD's
  • Vision: Needed to perform necessary assessments of patient status; medication administration; usage of computer terminals.
  • Smell: Helpful to note presence of incontinence, vomitus, blood; electrical/fire safety.
  • Hearing: Needed to hear patient call lights, yells for help, patient concerns; alarms (i.e. monitors, fire codes, via PA)
  • Touch: Needed to perform manual assessments, vaginal exams, and to comfort patients; manipulate tools

Horizontal movement of patients to and from carts/beds who are unable to move independently is done with assistive lifting equipment. Lifting equipment - carry 25’- 150’ waist high (IV bags, patient trays). Carry charts 25’-150’ waist high. Filled laundry bags are filled half full so as not to weigh over 35 lbs. Carry fire extinguishers up or down 3-4 flights of stairs and several yards in an emergency.
