Job summary

CorrHealth is seeking a Registered Nurse (RN) to provide comprehensive nursing services to inmates, including assessing their medical condition and administering necessary treatments. Qualifications include a degree from an accredited nursing program and a current RN license. Experience in correctional healthcare is preferred, but not required. The position requires maintaining patient confidentiality and adherence to facility policies.

Job description

Position Overview

Registered Nurses (RN) provide a full range of nursing services to inmates including assessing, nursing diagnosis, planning, implementing, and evaluating the medical condition of inmate patients. RNs provide information to other health care team members and contribute to the maintenance or restoration of health status. All correctional institution employees, including the incumbent, are responsible for maintaining the security of the institution.

Essential Job Duties

• Assess and identify health problems of new inmates and initiate medical records and special needs POR's.
• Respond to day to day medical issues and/or emergencies with patients.
• Administer prescribed treatments and medications as needed/medically required.
• Prepare medical equipment, records, and rooms for examinations of patients, assisting the provider if necessary.
• Practice sound pharmacology practices in preparation, maintenance, administration, and documentation of prescribed drugs and/or IV delivered therapies.
• Maintain IVs for IV therapies, as needed.
• Meet regularly with the HSA to review medical services administered to patients; may serve as Charge Nurse or Acting Supervisor in the absence of the HSA and delegate assignments among staff.
• Be aware of emergency procedures in the event of crisis situations and the appropriate plan of action governed by triage and written guidelines.
• Capable of giving CPR instructions and able to take charge in a CPR emergency; if trained, responsible for using AED equipment.
• Demonstrate ability to appropriately and safely use standard medical equipment including AED, EKG, blood pressure device, oxygen, sterilization, Glucometer, Doppler, Pulse Oximeter.
• Use logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions.
• Delegate tasks appropriately to lower level licensure employees.
• Educate patients regarding diet, hygiene, and methods of prevention of chronic medical diseases.

Schedule

6:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m.

Minimum Education/Experience Requirements

• Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated state accrediting agency at the time the program was completed.
• Current and unrestricted license as Registered Nurse; must maintain license.

Additional Duties

• Experience in correctional healthcare preferred but not required.

Employment Requirements

• Maintain all certifications, educational requirements, licensing, etc. for this position.
• Current CPR/BLS certification.
• Current TB test taken within one year.
• Adhere to all facility policies and procedures and Employee Handbook policies.
• Willing to assist coworkers and work overtime if required; may act as resource to other coworkers.
• Maintain confidentiality of health records and HIPAA compliance.
• Pass a background check and pre-employment drug test (as applicable).

Security Requirements

• Undergo security training and orientation on facility safety policies and procedures.

Physical/Mental Requirements

• Ability to remain stationary and move throughout the facility, including up and down flights of stairs.
• Ability to position oneself in different spaces.
• Ability to convey and discern information in conversation; frequently communicate with patients.
• Ability to identify and detect objects and assess situations from various distances.
• Maintain composure in stressful and demanding situations.
• Transport objects up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment

Work is performed inside a correctional facility. Employees are exposed to some level of risk including exposure to blood borne pathogens and potential harm by inmates. Employees are expected to work in accordance with all security rules and regulations to minimize risks.

• Employee must comply with all current and future State, Federal, and Local laws, regulations, court orders, administrative directives, standards, and policies related to correctional healthcare.
• Employee must treat all members of the Correctional Health team, correctional personnel, inmates, and third parties with dignity and respect; inappropriate or degrading communications will not be tolerated.
