General Summary

• This role is considered the minimum role for all nurses at UMMC with over 12 months of experience. The nurse will be competent in necessary skills and knowledge, and will participate fully in unit governance. They will practice and adhere to the guidelines specified in the UMMC Professional Nurse Job Charter. Independently, they will provide and coordinate care within a clinical specialty, serving as an effective member of the multidisciplinary team. They will demonstrate the full range of nursing practices and participate in strategies to improve patient outcomes, satisfaction, and cost-effectiveness at the unit level. They are accountable to patients and families for care processes and outcomes, to peers for group practice advancement, and to the nurse manager for overall work performance.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

• Successful completion of evaluation with passing of probation; current mandatory classes/training completed.
• Maryland RN licensure or eligibility through Compact agreements.
• Maintain 10 contact hours of education annually.
• Membership in a professional organization.
• Recent relevant clinical experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Ability to lead others, such as charge nurse, preceptor, or clinical resource; effective team member.
• Proficiency in computer systems for managing patient information.
• Knowledge to provide appropriate care for the patient population, including understanding growth and development, and ability to assess patient data.
• Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

Patient Safety

• Ensure patient safety in all job functions and participate in safety initiatives.
• Act to correct observed safety risks.
• Report adverse events and near misses.
• Identify and communicate potential risks in processes, procedures, or devices.
