Description:

The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the delivery of patient care. The professional nurse assumes responsibility and accountability for delegating patient care to other members of the healthcare team. Complies with the requirements of the RN pool policy. THIS POSITION IS PER DIEM.

The nursing staff within the ED shall be able to demonstrate the following nursing care:

  • Age-specific tasks meeting criteria and performance standards, with knowledge and abilities to care for neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Perform all aspects of the ED RN position according to departmental policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines.
  • Provide patients and families with written instructions regarding disease, treatments, and medications at discharge.
  • Interpret cardiac dysrhythmias and initiate actions per ACLS protocol.
  • Assist with insertion of temporary pacemakers, endotracheal intubation, and emergency airway management.
  • Assist with treatments for traumatic injuries such as lacerations, fractures, and peritoneal lavage.
  • Display knowledge of oxygen therapy modes, including mechanical ventilation.
  • Assist with insertion of chest tubes, assemble and maintain collection systems.
  • Demonstrate stabilization for cervical spine injuries using immobilization devices.
  • Apply or assist with slings, immobilizers, splints, and casts for musculoskeletal injuries.
  • Insert or assist with gastric tubes for lavage, suction, or medication administration.
  • Provide airway assessment and maintain artificial airway patency via suctioning.
  • Assist with oral and nasopharyngeal airways, ETT, cricothyrotomy, tracheostomy, and point-of-care testing (POCT).
  • Perform waived tests specific to the emergency department, such as pregnancy UA and glucose testing.
  • Possess knowledge of police examination procedures for rape evaluations/examinations.
  • Assist with forensic evidence collection in sexual assault cases (MFH).
  • Assess and care for patients with burns and inhalation injuries.
  • Demonstrate knowledge in obstetrical patient care.
  • Provide crisis intervention for psychiatric emergencies and psychological stress disorders.
  • Assess and care for patients with drug or alcohol ingestion.
  • Notify external agencies for reportable cases, including suspected child abuse, STD, TB, AIDS (Department of Health).
  • Manage complex care for critically ill patients, applying critical care principles.
  • Calculate, titrate, and administer medications, IV solutions, and skin tests per policy.
  • Manage ventilator support and weaning.
  • Follow VAP protocol

- For stroke care:

  • Initiate Stroke Alert for appropriate patients
  • Administer thrombolytic therapy
  • Follow stroke protocol

- For DVT management:

  • Follow DVT protocol

- For chest pain:

Prepare patients for Cath Lab procedures, including arterial blood gas sampling (not at MFH), invasive hemodynamic monitoring (CVP, PA lines, A-lines), rhythm and 12-lead ECG interpretation, cardiac pacing, defibrillation, and cardioversion.

Function as part of the Code Blue and Rapid Response Teams per hospital policy. Assist with invasive tube/line insertions as needed.

Provide procedural sedation, recognizing appropriate dosages, monitoring vital signs, maintaining IV access, and documenting appropriately.

Ensure age-related patient needs are met across special populations.
