Description

The Registered Nurse functions as a caregiver for a specific patient population to achieve desired outcomes. This position focuses on expanding knowledge and skills, providing effective direct care as part of the interdisciplinary team to a variety of complex patients. It involves directing and overseeing care provided by other caregivers through delegation, validation, evaluation, and coordination. The role also includes coordinating patient care/unit activities among nursing peers, physicians, and support services.

Responsibilities

A Registered Nurse at Hackensack Meridian Health delivers nursing practices based on the latest evidence-based research, policies, and standards of care to ensure safe and high-quality individualized patient care. Daily activities include:

  1. Collecting comprehensive data relevant to the patient's health or situation.
  2. Performing age- and disease-specific assessments/data collection independently, focusing on physiological, psychological, and cognitive status.
  3. Recognizing clinical and diagnostic status changes.
  4. Identifying variables in patient/family education needs based on age, disease, and cultural differences.
  5. Developing a care plan with strategies and interventions to meet expected outcomes.
  6. Formulating patient/family-centered goals/outcomes based on assessment data.
  7. Coordinating a patient/family-focused care plan that is prioritized and encompasses the continuum of care.
  8. Communicating, coordinating, and implementing the care plan.
  9. Providing ongoing communication with patients, families, colleagues, and other healthcare team members regarding patient status, care, and treatment plans.
  10. Providing or coordinating patient/family education and ensuring understanding.
  11. Following established protocols, including communication and documentation.
  12. Administering medications using advanced bar-scanning and documentation technologies for safety.
  13. Participating in multidisciplinary discharges to ensure safe transitions and continuity of care.
  14. Evaluating progress toward outcomes.
  15. Using critical thinking to achieve desired patient outcomes.
  16. Initiating interventions for changes in patient condition or unexpected responses to care.
  17. Identifying ethical issues and raising them with team members.
  18. Responding to opportunities to enhance patient satisfaction.
  19. Maintaining necessary competencies, certifications, and ongoing education to meet accreditation and licensing requirements.
  20. Adhering to the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics.
  21. Lifting a minimum of 35 lbs., pushing/pulling at least 10 lbs., standing for at least 6 hours daily.
  22. Following organizational and behavioral standards.
  23. Performing other duties or projects as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. Minimum of an associate degree in Nursing or a Nursing diploma.
  2. BSN in progress or willing to obtain within three years of hire.
  3. At least six months of relevant nursing experience or active participation in Hackensack Meridian Health's Nurse Residency Program.
  4. Ability to learn quickly, adapt to changing patient needs, and demonstrate accountability, teamwork, ongoing education, and a passion for high-quality patient care.

Preferred qualifications include national certification in a specialty area when eligible.

Licenses and Certifications:

  1. NJ State Professional Registered Nurse License.
  2. BLS/CPR certification by American Heart Association within 60 days of hire.
