Overview

Works under the supervision of the Nurse Manager/Clinical Coordinator. The Registered Nurse (RN) assesses, plans, implements, evaluates, and supervises individual patient care according to unit policies and procedures, including the PCU level patient. Provides supervision of non-RN personnel on the assigned unit. When assuming the charge role, delegates and supervises unit activities. May be required to work on other nursing units according to staff and patient distribution. Performs other duties as assigned to maintain high service levels.

Responsibilities

  1. Assesses the patients' physical and psychosocial condition throughout care.
  2. Develops, communicates, and documents a care plan reflecting patient problems and interventions, involving the patient, family, and healthcare team.
  3. Implements and coordinates this care plan with the healthcare team.
  4. Evaluates care effectiveness, patient responses, and readiness for discharge; revises the plan as needed and makes referrals.
  5. Plans and provides education based on patient and family learning needs; documents outcomes.
  6. Functions as a preceptor to new staff.
  7. Acts as a charge nurse.
  8. Ensures a safe environment for self and patients.
  9. Meets performance expectations in Customer Service, Teamwork, Resource Utilization, and Staff and Self Development.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned to ensure department operation.
  11. Unit-specific: Demonstrates assessment skills of the lungs and instructs patients in breathing exercises.

Qualifications

Education

Graduate of an accredited nursing school; BSN preferred. Proficient in electronic health records and internet research for patient care.
