Job description

Registered Nurse Labor and Delivery

At UT Southwestern Medical Center, our obstetricians, certified nurse midwives, labor and delivery nurses, and maternity nurses provide the best possible birth experience for women and families. UTSW is a Level IV comprehensive care maternal facility and a Level III Neonatal facility. We offer advanced training and years of experience, providing compassionate care for mothers, babies, and their families throughout labor and delivery. We handle over 2000 deliveries per year, with 16 LDRs, 3 ORs, and 5 prep & recovery rooms.

Our staffing offers competitive nurse-to-patient ratios and has received multiple awards including the Gold PACT pin, D Magazine Excellence in Nursing, and Daisy Award. Our Labor and Delivery team is part of the Texas AIM program.

Experience and Education
  • Current Texas (or BNE Compact State) Registered Nurse license
  • Graduate of an approved/accredited nursing program as per Texas BON 217.1
  • BSN preferred
  • One year of RN experience; additional experience may be required for specialty areas
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications from AHA or ARC
  • NRP certification from AAP
  • Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) certification
Job Duties
  • Supervise and evaluate patient care provided by staff; conduct rounds and chart audits; mentor personnel
  • Manage staffing to meet productivity targets; coordinate with staffing offices; adjust staffing based on census and acuity
  • Model proactive problem solving; advocate for patients and staff; ensure safe care environment
  • Provide coverage during staffing shortages; coach and evaluate staff; promote professional growth
  • Report events via RL Solutions; investigate incidents; notify management of high-risk situations
  • Participate in patient care conferences; work to improve patient satisfaction and discharge processes
  • Maintain records of performance; conduct evaluations and orientation
  • Coordinate scheduling; monitor attendance and overtime; manage inventory of supplies and equipment
  • Assist with meetings, projects, and quality improvement activities; participate in hospital work groups
  • Perform other duties as assigned
