Registered Nurse - Infusions and Oncology

Location Fairbanks, AK, US

  • Job Summary:** The incumbent nurse will provide and coordinate infusion activities to ensure compassionate patient care. Provides direct patient care in compliance with professional practice and clinic standards. The nurse will also promote a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach toward patients, families, and all members of the care delivery team.
  • Adhere to the TCC Ch'eghwtsen' model of service and guiding principle which requires providing timely and effective service along with the ability to interact with others in a way that inspires trust and demonstrates respect, compassion, and empathy.

  • Representative Duties:** Under the general administrative supervision of the Cancer Care and Infusions Nurse Manager the incumbent will:
  • Administer infusion treatments via peripheral IV, implanted port, PICC line, or other vascular access to include hydration, iron infusion, antibiotics, and other IV medications and treatments in accordance with medical providers orders and established nursing practice policies and procedures.
  • Identify, assess, and provide nursing interventions for problems arising during infusion therapies using ONS (Oncology Nursing Society) recommended adverse reaction protocols, physical assessment skills, and patient interactions.
  • Develop and participate in education for patients and families regarding procedures and treatments, expected side effects, and post-discharge care plans.
  • Identify the need for patient care meetings with the health care team to revise the plan of care as the patients condition and level of satisfaction warrants.
  • Maintain a safe and therapeutic patient care environment.
  • Delegate patient care tasks and nursing interventions to lower-level staff as needed based on their training, licensure, and scope of practice.
  • Keep current on advances and evidenced-based practices in oncology and infusions nursing by participating in continuing education activities.
  • Participate in quality management to positively affect patient and system outcomes to improve care.
  • Document patient care in the health care record according to standards, policies, and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse. A Baccalaureate degree in nursing is preferred.
  • Two (2) years of experience in direct care nursing positions with experience in establishing and/or maintaining vascular access (establishing peripheral IV access and working with PICC lines, implanted ports, etc.)
  • Ability to obtain ONS chemotherapy/biotherapy certification within six (6) months.
  • BLS or ability to obtain within six (6) weeks of beginning employment.
  • Ability to pass background checks pursuant to the Indian Child Protection Act and State of Alaska background check.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
  • Strong verbal, written, interpersonal, and critical thinking skills for leadership decision-making, managing workflow, and maintaining customer satisfaction.
  • Ability to demonstrate proficiency in the programs specialty nursing skills.
  • Ability to maintain patient and employee confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated time management capability.
  • Highly organized with the ability to balance multiple competing requests.
  • Proficiency in operating PC computers, using productivity software (Microsoft Office applications), and using electronic medical records systems.
  • Supervision:** This position does not supervise other employees.
  • Physical Demands:** Work requires walking, standing, and occasional lifting, bending, and pushing to assist patients, move equipment, and issue supplies. Sedentary activities consist of sitting at a desk, typing, and computer operation. Knowledge and use of proper body mechanics and office ergonomics is required. Some degree of risk is associated with driving during winter conditions with arctic temperatures. Travel to villages in small aircraft may be required.
  • Work Environment:** There is common exposure to contagious diseases. Some degree of risk is also present in working with substance use-affected individuals and emotionally disturbed patients. There is risk of exposure to toxic chemotherapy agents and other high-risk medications.
  • Occupational Exposure to Other Potentially Infectious Materials:** Occasionally exposed to blood, body tissue, and other potentially infectious materials; Exposure Category I.
  • Summation:** Patients served are primarily Alaska Natives. Must be patient and willing to effectively communicate with and provide guidance to patients and coworkers of all cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds with kindness and compassion.
